From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Río Negro (Spanish for "Black River") is a river in Uruguay. Its headwater is near Bagé, Brazil. It is a tributary of the Uruguay River.
The course of the Río Negro, from eastern to western Uruguay effectively divides the south of the country from the north.
During the mid 20th century, with race issues prominent across the globe, it was cult playwrite Howard Bown who wrote a play based on the hard struggles of Joe Chalk, a local migrant worker based around the predominant Hispanic area of Rio Negro, which was, at the time, considered to be named in a racially unacceptable fashion.
