Río Negro (English: Black River) is a Chilean city and commune in Osorno Province, Los Lagos Region, 38 km to the south of Osorno and 6 km of 5 Route the South. It has an area of 1,266 km² and a population of 14,732 inhabitants (7,204 women and 7,528 men according to census 2002).
The commune is bordered on the north by Osorno,San Juan de la Costa , to the east by Puerto Octay, the west by the Pacific Ocean, and the south by Purranque.
Together with the communes of Puyehue, Puerto Octay, Purranque, Fresia, Frutillar, Llanquihue, Puerto Varas and Los Muermos the Electoral District Nº 56 and belongs to 17ª Senatorial Circumscription (The South Lakes).
The origin of the Río Negro name is Mapuche, It comes from the Mapudungun Curuleufu ( Curu:Black | Leufu:River )y also means Black River or Cloudy Waters

In 19th century the Commune was a great property located between Chahuilco and Purranque, call Curileufu by the natives . It was founded on lands donated by gift from Jose Miguel Alderete, the year 1896. The first inhabitants were indigenous of the zone.
The first Mayor was Pedro González.
