Welcome to the Probability and statistics subproject of WikiProject Mathematics.
Contents |
[edit] Scope
This Wikipedia subproject (or work group) covers probability theory and statistics, the history of probability and statistics, and biographies of probabilists and statisticians. Articles within its scope include those:
- Flagged as belonging to the Probability and Statistics field by the {{maths rating}} template;
- Included in the List of statistics topics;
- Included in Category:Statistics or Category:Probability or their sub-categories;
[edit] To do
[edit] To do items for members of Probability and statistics work group
- Tag related articles (see below)
- Find editors who have shown interest in this subject and ask them to take a look here. Possible sources:
- Category:Wikipedian statisticians
- WikiProject Mathematics/Participants mentioning statistics among their areas of interest
- Identify articles for creation
- Identify articles for improvement
- Review importance and quality of existing articles listed at WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0/Probability and statistics.
- Identify articles to merge
- Reorganize Category:Statistics

[edit] Guidelines
[edit] Tagging and assessment
Any articles that are within the scope of WikiProject Mathematics should be tagged on the talk page with the {{maths rating}} banner (or equivalently {{math rating}} which is a redirect). Adding "field=probability and statistics" will cause VeblenBot to add the page to WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0/Probability and statistics within 24 hours.
{{maths rating | field=probability and statistics}}
produces:
You can also rate the importance and quality of the article using the "importance" and "class" parameters — see WikiProject Mathematics/Wikipedia 1.0 for full details. It's probably best not to assess the quality yourself if you've edited the article substantially, however.
You may also find {{WikiProjectBanners}} useful for articles within the scope of multiple WikiProjects.
[edit] Categories
Please try to assign articles to an appropriate sub-category rather than the top level of the probability or statistics categories. Category:statistics is in need of some reorganization at present.

[edit] Templates
For main project templates, see the main project page for WikiProject Mathematics.
Specific templates of interest include:
[edit] Navigational templates
These can be used at the bottom of articles at editors' discretion.
- {{ProbDistributions}}
- {{Statistics}}
[edit] Infobox templates
Infoboxes go at the top of the article code and appear at the top right of the article.
- {{Probability distribution}}
- {{Probability distribution two}} for distributions with two common representations, parameterizations or definitions, e.g. Geometric distribution
- {{Infobox scientist}} for biographies
Note that all parameters in {{Probability distribution}} and {{Probability distribution two}} must be kept in the code to avoid raw code for them appearing in the infobox — leave them blank if unknown. Inapplicable parameters in {{Infobox scientist}} can be deleted. Applicable but unknown parameters should be kept but left blank.
[edit] Stub templates
- {{Probability-stub}}
- {{Statistics-stub}}
