Karl Rapp (* 24 September 1882 in Ehingen (Danube); " 26. May 1962 in Locarno) was founder and owner of the Rapp Motorenwerke.
After the union of the Rapp Motorenwerke with the Gustav petrol flight engine works to the Bavarian aircraft engine works, a forerunner of the Bavarian engines of works, Karl Rapp left the enterprise. Afterwards it operated among other things with Augusts Piccard it had it in Locarno a private observatory.

The 1913 of Rapp created Rapp of engine works GmbH in Munich co-operated during the First World War within the range of the airplane and/or building of aircraft engines with the company Gustav Otto flight machine works of the mechanical engineer Gustav Otto (1883-1926, son of Nicolaus August Otto), which came however to 1916 into financial difficulties and turned into then (apparent without direct co-operation Rapps) on the Bavarian aircraft plants AG (NLG).
The Rapp of engine works GmbH was developed 1917 by engineer Franz Josef Popp and the large investor Camillo Castiglioni to Bavarian engine works the GmbH (BMW). Karl Rapp separated at this time from the enterprise, he from then on apparent dedicated himself excluding scientific studies. Together with Augusts Piccard it operated Höhenforschung, in addition it possessed a private observatory in Locarno.
The follow-up enterprise Bavarian engine works GmbH (BMW) became 1918 the corporation and firmierte starting from 1920 with changed production spectrum as South German one brake-gnaws (as a daughter of the today's Knorr brake AG). Karl Rapp was born 1850 in Stuttgart. Over its family origin, childhood and youth nothing is well-known.
Rapp learned the engineering profession and was active until 1912 as a technical designer with Daimler Benz in its hometown. Subsequently, Rapp developed aircraft engines with the airframes Germany GmbH in Munich.
Engineer created 1913 with the Rapp of engine works GmbH with Munich its own enterprise, which developed and built aircraft engines with first seven coworkers. Here Rapp could profit from the Zusammenmitarbeit with the airplane technical designer Gustav Otto, which operated the Gustav Otto flight engine works as a son of the inventor of the four-stroke engine (Otto engine).
The company expanded rapidly and employed already 1915 370 coworkers. In March 1916 Rapp with the airplane manufacturer Gustav Otto fused Bavarian aircraft plants to the AG (NLG). The Rapp of engine works remained however as independent enterprise.
The establishment of the NLG to 9. March 1916 is considered as official birth to the later Bavarian engine works (BMW). During the First World War the Rapp of engine works received the license from Austro Daimler for production from aircraft engines.
On behalf the Austrian war Ministry Franz Josef Popp led the handling of order in Munich. When Rapp from the Rapp engine works withdrew itself shortly thereafter, Popp in the management followed him. The Viennese engineer was in the consequence considerably in the transformation of the Rapp of engine works to Bavarian engines of works GmbH (BMW) involved, in 20 July 1917 took place.
With the first BMW product, the aircraft engine IIIa, also the future BMW brand name is established: a white-blue propeller circle. Popp was raised 1918 with the transformation of the enterprise into a corporation to the general manager from BMW, which it remained until 1942.
Finally it came 1922 to the fusion of NLG and the past BMW to a new large-scale enterprise, which further under the designation BMW firmierte. 1923 developed the past aircraft engine farmer with the “R32” the first BMW motorcycle.
Rapp died to 26. May 1926 in Locarno. The first BMW automobile should with in English license developed “Dixie” only two years later to be built.
