[edit] History
Børge Quorning founded Quorning Boats in 1967 with the aim to build safe high quality trimarans with good performance. This timing makes Quorning Boats one of the early leading edge trimaran manufacturers in the world.
International recognition came in 1985 when Børge Quorning's two sons, Eric and Jens, in separate boats, sailed The Round Britain and Ireland Race. On corrected time they came first and second, Eric sailing the high-tech Dragonfly 25' MKI Magic Hempel and Jens the special wing masted 35' Dragonfly prototype Quick Step. In the years to come Dragonfly dominated many international multihull races, including one World Championship and four European Championships in the Micro class.
[edit] Development
Sailing the Dragonflys was great fun, but the trimarans were too wide in the marinas. To reach the broad market, something had to be done.
Børge and Jens designed and developed their Swing Wing system in 1988-89 and started a new era in the Dragonfly history, introducing the trailable Dragonfly 800 Swing Wing. The Swing Wing system made it possible to reduce the beam by more than 50% within less than two minutes, using no tools, working only from the cockpit. Since then no fixed wing trimaran has left the yard. This Swing Wing and the Farrier Folding System are the only two methods in large-scale production use.
The tendency for bigger boats became very clear in late 1997. Time had come for a bigger challenge to design and develop the biggest folding production trimaran ever, which was quite an ambitious project. This project should prove for finale that the Quorning designed swing-wing system could stand up and meet this big challenge with the Dragonfly 1200 Swing Wing Ocean Cruiser. It took full 2½ years to develop this complicated product, and was the Quorning contribute to the new Millennium. The aim for these 2½ years was to introduce this great product at the fair Boot 2000 in Düsseldorf, Germany, in January 2000 and the Quornings managed to keep their Millennium promise.
The Dragonfly 1200 Swing Wing was a great success, and even before it was launched, four boats were sold. In 2001 the Dragonfly 1200 became Boat of the Year in USA, chosen by Cruising World magazine. Further in 2001, it received the prestigious Danish Design Prize, which was handed over to Jens and Børge Quorning by his Royal Highness Crown Prince Frederik, who himself is a keen sailor.
