If this religion is practiced in Brazil, then... how could it be an "Afro-American" religion? That doesn't make any sense, and it sounds like a racist categorization. [unsigned edit by anonymous user 24.58.35.49]

Brazil is part of the Americas, and these religions (at least in part) originate in Africa. Perhaps you could suggest an alternate term for such religions? ntennis 08:20, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
So why don't just call it African religion? If it is originated in Africa and it is practiced in Brazil, why say that it is "Afro-American"? In Brazil we say "Afro-Brazilian" (afro-brasileira). Ultranol 18:03, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Afro-Brazilian is a common term when speaking about religion that has African origins and is practiced in Brazil. Afro-American is probaly a extension to encompass the other related religions established in the new world (Santeria, Voudou, Obleah, etc). Quimbanda is Afro-Brazilian (I don't think it is practices anywhere else). Calling it Afro-American just broadens the view, I suppose. Calling it just african would be misleading, as this would not reflect the fact that the african roots have been deeply altered.. --Qyd 19:12, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
