Quinton Fortune (born May 21, 1977 in Cape Town) is a South African footballer who has represented a number of European clubs including Manchester United, Atletico Madrid and Bolton Wanderers. Fortune has earned 53 caps for the South Africa, including playing in the 1998 and the 2002 World Cups.

[edit] Club career

Fortune left South Africa at the age of 14 and moved to England where he played for the Tottenham Hotspur junior team, but never made a senior appearance for the club. After having trouble obtaining a work permit, Fortune moved to Spain, where he played for Atlético Madrid.

Manchester United purchased him from Atlético Madrid on 1 August 1999. He made his first appearance for the club on 30 August 1999, against Newcastle United.

Fortune was initially brought to United as cover for Ryan Giggs, and was thought of primarily as an attacking left-sided midfielder. Fortune, however, proved himself a capable and dedicated performer in a number of positions. It was Fortune's strength as a defender, rather than his qualities as an attacker, that Sir Alex Ferguson depended most on, and Fortune was often deployed as an uncompromising central midfielder or a solid, no-nonsense left-back. Fortune picked up an FA Premier League winners medal in 2002-03, despite being one appearance short of the required ten.

Fortune's appearances at United were limited by a number of injuries during his time there, and he was released by Manchester United in 2006. On 26 July 2006 he signed a one-year deal with Bolton. Injuries continued plaguing Fortune at Bolton, and after six league appearances in the 2006-07 season, he was released by Bolton in May 2007 along with 3 other players.

Fortune is currently without a club. There has been speculation that he could join Blackburn Rovers, where Fortune's countrymen Aaron Mokoena and Benni McCarthy also play.
