Quinto, Aragon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quinto is a village and municipality in the province of Zaragoza, Aragon, on the south bank of the River Ebro about 45 Km south-east of Zaragoza. It is located at 41°25′12″N, 0°29′24″WCoordinates: 41°25′12″N, 0°29′24″W. In 2004 its population was about 2,045.

During the Battle of Belchite in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, Spanish Republican forces including the British Battalion of XV International Brigade captured the village from the Nationalists. Fierce house-to-house fighting destroyed many buildings, including the historic church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción overlooking the village. The church, with its fine Mudéjar tower, has recently been restored.
