[edit] The Quest Books

The Quest Books, are a fantasy book series written by Lisa Wright DeGroodt. The series records the journeys or quests of individuals that travel to a parallel dimension known as "the Land." The central principle of the series concerns maintaining balance between Good and Evil in the Land by calling to unique individuals in the World Dimension to travel to the Land and face the conflicts created by Evil.

“The Land” is a mythical, parallel dimension that has been invaded by Evil, who wants to topple all the Dimensions it comes into, creating chaos in the Interdimensional Grid. The World Dimension, the world we inhabit, has been fighting Evil for eons, and we are uniquely capable of withstanding Evil’s influence.

The Land reaches across the Interdimensional Void and selects a “Protector”; a World Dimension inhabitant who comes to the Land via a ruby and gold Tree. Each Protector embarks on a “quest” in the Land, and finds a unique Land gift, one that will help the Protector in their task.

The books inhabit three distinct locations: The World Dimension, The Land and the Interdimensional Void. The Grid Manager, a mythical being who oversees the Grid in which the Land and World reside, is believed to have put the quests into motion. He is assisted by Interdimensional Fairies, who are magical beings with silvery wings set with jewels.

In the Land, there is the Prince, who is an Oracle. An Oracle is the most powerful of magical creatures. An Oracle is required for the Land to survive. Another major power in the Land is the Seer. She sees the future and divines the path the Land should take to protect itself. She also oversees the Tree and maintains its health. The third major power, Healer, is a line that has died out before the series starts.

Each book has a new Protector. The Protectors are as follows:

  • Oracle Quest-Katie Gaber
  • Relic Quest-Tracy Rain
  • Barrier Quest-Benjamin Harm
  • Charm Quest-Sasha Vanden
  • Land Quest-Sarat

There are 5 books in the series so far. Book 6 will be published by the end of summer 2008. Lisa Wright DeGroodt has said that she has completed manuscripts on many more quests, and plans to publish 2-3 books per year until the series is complete.

[edit] Premise

The Land has been invaded by Evil, who wants to topple all the Dimensions it assaults, creating chaos in the Interdimensional Grid. In order to battle Evil, the Land reaches across the Interdimensional Void and calls a “Protector” from the World Dimension, who travels to the Land via a ruby and gold Tree. Each Protector embarks on a “quest” in the Land, and discovers a unique gift that aids the Protector in their task.

The Dimensions collectively belong to a Grid, which is overseen by a Grid Manager. There are many Dimensions in each Grid and many Grids in the Interdimensional Void, where the Grid Managers work with Interdimensional Fairies to try and maintain the balance between Good and Evil. The Grid Manager for the Land is believed to have put the quests in motion as part of his effort to protect the Land, whose survival is key to the future of the entire Grid.

In the series, Evil is trying to take over different Dimensions within the Interdimensional Void. Evil is not a particular person, but a personified menace that uses individuals from Dimensions it has conquered to try and defeat others. Evil's minions are wide-spread and varied in their attacks on the Land. Those under the influence of Evil are usually possessed with a form of Supernatural power that makes them formidable to those of the Land.

The Land itself possesses a magic of its own that is manifest in several powerful beings. The Prince is the ruler of the Land and an Oracle. The Oracle is the most powerful entity in the Land and is able to call on magic for defense. The Land must have a resident Oracle in order to survive. Another major power in the Land is the Seer. She sees the future and divines the path the Land should take to protect itself. The Seer also oversees the Tree used by the Protectors to travel to the Land. She watches over the Tree and maintains its health. The third major power, the Healer, is a power whose line has died out before the series starts.

Each book has a new Protector, who is called to the Land in response to a problem usually fashioned by Evil. In the series, past Protectors play a large part in the action and preparation of the new Protectors.

[edit] Universe

The Quest Universe inhabits three distinct locations: The World Dimension, The Land and the Interdimensional Void. The World Dimension, the Interdimensional name for Earth, has been fighting Evil for eons, and is uniquely capable of withstanding Evil’s influence. The locations and landscapes are exactly those 21st Century America.

The Interdimensional Void exists in a place outside the individual Dimensions. It is a place where time is fluid and magic is a commonplace means used to maintain the balance. The Void is inhabited by Grid Managers and Interdimensional Fairies.

The Land is a fantasy world like that of [Narnia] where magic and mythical creatures abound. The Land possesses a timelessness although it has no modern technology like that of the World. Until the recent introduction of Evil, the Land was a place of idyllic relations where the inhabitants knew nothing of deception or intrigue. As a result of their past, the Landers are very unprepared for dealings with Evil prompting their reliance upon those from the World Dimension.

The Land has a distinct topography with rigidly defined borders between its regions. Each Region of the Land also has a very distinct and defined landscape. The Land is surrounded by the oceans that reach out to the Barrier, which is the dimensional wall denoting the outer shell of the dimension.

The Mountains Region contains the only mountains to be found in the Land. The main action in the series that takes place in this region occurs in the Mountain Village, home of the Seer of the Land.

The Meadows Region contains the city of Wayside and shares the city of Convergence (which is located at the junction of the Meadows, Marshes and Mountains Regions). This region consists of tall grasses and is where a great deal of the agricultural and animal husbandry efforts of the Land occur.

The Marshes Region is said to be the most dangerous in the Land. The Marshes consist of wetlands that are home the Quicksilver, a tubular silver organism that adheres to all non-plant organic materials forming a hard shell that kills whatever is consumed. The Marshes are not inhabited with the exception of a few hermits living on small islands throughout the marshes.

The Rivers Region is so named because of the many waterways that bisect the area. This region is home to the Capital City, which is the seat of government in the land and home the Prince. The Capital City magically floats above the lake found inside the Rivers Region.

The Forest Region contains pine trees and forest animals. There is a thriving lumber industry in this region, as well as orchards. The largest city in the area is know as Hilltree. The Desert Region contains an arid, sandy landscape devoid of water. The only inhabitants of the region are nomads.

The Beaches Region surround all of the other regions dividing them from the oceans. The Beaches form a perfect circle around the Land and have no real cities located inside its boundaries.

[edit] The Series

The series refrains from setting the books in a particular time and year, however, action that takes place in the World Dimension suggests that the setting is concurrent with 21st Century America.
