Queen Mary Students' Union (commonly referred to as QMSU) is the students' union for Queen Mary, University of London.
The College's Students' Union is based on Bancroft Road, Mile End, and has a gym, shop and prayer room. The bar fills up on Monday nights (termed Happy Mondays, which is a drinks promotion night), every Tuesday for stupid Tuesdays, Wednesdays (the biggest night of the week for the College's sports clubs) for Mary's Cheese, Now! Music events (run by a students' society) on Thursdays and the regular theme nights and club nights that fill out what was considered by many to be the biggest and best students' union venue in London, Club e1. e1 closed on 19th January 2007 with Drapers (the Bar) closed in March 2007, though Drapers is scheduled to re-open in January 2008.
The new offices for the Students' Union are now in the Blomley Centre in the Student Village on Westfield Way. It is home the non-commercial services such as the student activities and welfare support allowing a new fitness center and bar/cafe to be built in the Bancroft Road building.
There are also plans to create a new health and fitness centre at the heart of the campus, which will in turn allow the existing Students' Union building to be redeveloped, potentially resulting in a media suite, a redeveloped bar and a generally more pleasant environment for students at Queen Mary.
The Students' Union publishes a magazine every month called Cub, along with a bi-monthly sports paper, Sport 'd. Additionally, London Student is distributed in the Union.
Elections are held each year for 5 full-time sabbatical officers and 13 other executive officers, who have a wide variety of responsibilities, ranging from the environment to equal opportunities within the university. Elections are completed by anonymous cross-campus ballot each year, which also includes election to the Union's numerous and diverse range of standing committees.
In 2001 a referendum was held on the question of disaffiliation from the National Union of Students; in somewhat controversial circumstances, the status quo prevailed.
