Queen Elizabeth High School is one of two secondary schools for the Carmarthen area.
Until 2005 it was two different schools: Queen Eizabeth Maridunum School and Queen Elizabeth Cambria School which were relatively close due to the fact that they both used to be the grammar schools for the area, one for girls and one for boys.
The Girls Grammar School became Queen Elizabeth Cambria School, and the Boys Grammar School became Queen Elizabeth Maridunum. In 2005, the two schools merged together as part of a scheme to increase the efficiency of the secondary schools in the town.
Mr Tim Day is the current headteacher and the two sites still exist today with Key Stage 3 pupils on the Maridunum site or the "lower campus" and Key Stage 4 and sixth form on the Cambria site or "higher campus".
Not true : Queen Elizabeth Maridunum and Queen Elizabeth Cambria were both Comprehensive Schools covering different catchment areas, prior to these shools coming into existence they were a Secondary Modern School(Called Ystrad Towy) and Girls Grammar School Respectively.
[edit] New School
In 2005, the plans for the new school building were put forward. It is planned to incorporate advances in school design made since the 1960s, will have capacity for ~1,400 pupils (the current combined population of both schools is 1,700 pupils, while the current designed capacity of both the current school buildings is ~900), and a planned lifespan of 30 years. The new school building is to be located on the Cambria site. The Carmarthen leisure centre, which separates the two sites, will be extended and modernised. The new school is due to open in 2008, when the existing school buildings will be demolished.
