Queen City

Queen City may refer to:
The nickname Queen City is commonly used by cities in nations of British origin, especially in Commonwealth Realms where it describes the capital city of a province or state in honor of Queen Elizabeth II.
- Auckland, New Zealand has been known as the Queen City despite no longer being the capital of New Zealand. This moniker has largely fallen into disuse.
- Charlotte, North Carolina and its county are named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, wife of King George III, and goes by the Queen City or simply the "Q.C."[1]
- Regina, Saskatchewan is named after Queen Victoria, and is fondly referred to as the Queen City; regina is Latin for queen.[2]
- Toronto, Ontario is sometimes referred to as Queen City, particularly by Canadian Francophones ("La Ville-Reine").
The term is also used by a number of cities in the United States without any reference to British origin:
- Buffalo, New York is popularly referred to as the Queen City due to it being the second largest city in the state of New York.[3]
- Cincinnati, Ohio, after experiencing rapid growth in the early 19th century, and becoming one of the first major inland cities in the U.S., was dubbed the "Queen of the West", or the Queen City.[4]
- Denver, Colorado was initially named the "Queen City of the Plains", due to the city's location on the High Plains, but it is more commonly nicknamed The Mile High City.[5]
- Seattle, Washington used Queen City as its official nickname from 1869 until 1982 when Emerald City was chosen from a contest to replace it. It is the county seat of King County, Washington.[6]
