[edit] Language userboxes and categories
There's two main methods of adding yourself to a language skills category:
- Add the right babel userbox or userboxes to your userpage, or,
- Add yourself to the category manually.
I'll explain both:
[edit] Userboxes and the Babel system
Language userboxes can be found at WP:Babel primarily. A shortcut to userboxes in general is just to use WP:UBX. While I try to pick userboxes that are somewhat meaningful, I don't always succeed, and I think quite honestly that I've got far too many of them.
I'll cheat and copy directly from the page WP:Babel for this: (See that page for more options please)
- Start off with {{Babel-X|
- Next add one of the following codes for each language you speak or understand, separated by |, where xx is the Wikipedia code for the language. The general usage of each code level is as follows (note that not all languages have all levels, but you may create the template you are missing):
- xx-0 if you don't understand the language at all. Don't use it for every language you don't know; only when there is some reason why you might be expected to know it.
- xx-1 for basic ability - enough to understand written material or simple questions in this language.
- xx-2 for intermediate ability - enough for editing or discussions.
- xx-3 for advanced level - though you can write in this language with no problem, some small errors might occur.
- xx-4 for 'near-native' level - although it's not your first language from birth, your ability is something like that of a native speaker.
- xx-5 for professional proficiency. Note that this template is currently only available for English, French, and Spanish; the German one was recently deleted at TfD.
- xx (no hyphen or number) for native speakers who use a language every day and have a perfect grasp of it, including colloquialisms.
- Expanded definitions of these levels are also available.
- Then finish by adding closing braces: }}
[edit] Adding yourself to a category manually
There isn't an easy way to determine which categories you can add yourself into, but I think the generally used method is to start by first selecting what userboxes you would use, if you used userboxes, then going directly to that userbox.
Let's say you can communicate with a professional level of English.
Normally, you'd add {{user en-5}} to your userpage, but you've decided to eschew userboxes. They're tacky and multicolor and play havoc with your page layout. No problem.
In the search box on the side, type "Template:user en-5" (without the quotes, of course) and hit Go. You find yourself at the main copy of the userbox template for "user en-5". See down at the bottom where it shows the categories? "user en" and "user en-5"?
That's your key. To add those categories to you, you'd add [[Category:user en]] and [[Category:user en-5]] to the bottom of your userpage. Don't forget the "user" part! :D If you'd like to learn a bit more about categories, I'd probably suggest visiting Help:Category, it's a lot more informative than I am!
Anyway, hope that's a good basic primer for you. Make sure you visit that WP:UBX and WP:Babel for me, okay? Very informative, helps you learn both templates and categories quickly. If you have any other questions, or run into something you don't understand, either leave me a note or ask on the talkpage of the page in question. No matter how much I act like a knowitall, I really don't! :D
Take care! ~Kylu (u|t) 06:44, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks so much!
Thanks for wishing me luck with that problem, I appreciate the thought! ~Kylu (u|t) 04:44, 10 June 2006 (UTC) |
