[edit] Another SF novel I once read

In the nineties I read a pulp SF paperback novel that had this theme. The hero was able to get access to heavily guarded buildings by quantum jiggery pokery. Also, it was possible to purchase brain modifications which would re-organise a few neurones into circuits to do various things, such as having a clock or HUD in your brain. And I seem to remember an avatar that was created to give the hero a message but which was also aware of its own death afterwards - or maybe that was another SF novel.
