From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quarter Mile Bridge is located in the western suburbs of Melbourne and crosses the Maribyrnong River. It is located near the E.J. Whitten Bridge, and is 400 metres long (hence the quarter mile name). It was built in 1928, making it the largest trestle bridge in Australia at the time. It employed 200 with one person dying during its construction. The bridge carries mainly freight trains, but also carries the Melbourne/Sydney CountryLink XPT. Its height is 54.6 metres above the surface of the water, making it higher than the Sydney Harbour Bridge (52 metres) and the Westgate Bridge (53 metres).
