Description

Diagram of British Mk IV QF Fixed round with 18 lb Double Common shell, for QF 2.95 inch Mountain Gun.
Propellant : 5 oz Cordite Mark I, size 5. Igniter 4 drams S.F.G. 2 powder.
Paper cylinder 2.65 inches long is between charge and shell.
Mk III Shell is of cast iron, 14.34 inches long. Bursting charge 14 oz "P" mixture (R.F.G. powder, a form of gunpowder). Total shell weight fuzed and filled = 18 lb. "Double" served to differentiate this 18 lb shell from the standard 12.5 lb common shell.
NOTE : This was one of the few British common shells remaining in service by 1914. It was unusual for a British Common Shell in having a base rather than a nose fuze.
