Description

Diagram of British Mk IX QF 12 pounder Shrapnel shell, Naval service, 1918.
Shell length 8.12 inch, diameter 2.98 inches.
Contained 227 bullets (41/lb).
Weight filled anf fuzed 12.5 lbs.
The shell is of the modern shrapnel generation of 1914 :-

  • with a separate base which screws into the shell
  • has 2-inch fuze hole instead of previous 1-inch G.S. fuze hole
  • the bursting charge is in the form of compressed pellets of gunpowder
  • the central tube is filled with powder pellets to increase dispersal of the bullets, which also takes over the role of the previous primer.
