Qarabagh District, Ghazni

The Qarabagh (Qarah Bagh) district is located 56 km to South West of Ghazni. It covers 1 800 km² area. The district is one of the most populated -109 000, but some reports count more than 200 000. There are two ethnic groups -55% Pashtun and 45% Hazara. The landscape is different in the different parts of the district-deserts in the South West, plains in the South East and mountains in the North. The district like the other areas is seriously affected by the drought, especially the farming and animal husbandry. The health and education need serious improvement.

Taliban militiamen are active in the area. Threats from Taliban have forced the girls' schools in the district to close. The Taliban briefly seized the government headquarters at the district centre in the town of Qarabagh in april 2007. In July 2007, 23 Korean aid workers were kidnapped by the Taliban as their bus was hijacked passing through the district on the highway between Kabul and Kandahar.Currntly it is one of the unsafed place like other sounthern provinces such as Zabul, Kandahar, Helmand and Orazgan.
