Pyotr Ivanovich Kafarov (Пётр Ива́нович Кафа́ров), also known by his monastic name Palladiy (Палла́дий), (1817 – 1878), was an early Russian sinologist.
Kafarov was born in the familly of Orthodox priest. He studied in Kazan seminary and Sankt-Petersbourg Academy, from which was directed to the Russian Orthodox Mission in China.
Like his teacher Ioakinf Bichurin, Palladiy was a Russian Orthodox monk. During his stay in China, he discovered and published many invaluable manuscripts, including The Secret History of the Mongols.
More than three decades Archimandrite Palladiy headed the Russian Orthodox mission in China[1] and held etnographic and linguistic research there.
Kafarov has designed a Cyrillization system for the Chinese language, known as the Palladiy system. This system till now provides the basis for official transcription of Chinese names and toponyms in Russia.
The Chinese-Russian Dictionary composed by Archimandrite Palladiy is a well-know scientific work even today.[2]
