Purnell and Sons was formed in the 1880's by William Purnell as a small family printers, with small print shops in Radstock, Midsomer Nortonand Paulton.

It became a major publisher of children's Christian Biblical books in colour, including mail order catalogues before merging with several other print companies to form the British Printing Company.

In the 1970s and 1980s, it was part of Polestar Group owned by Robert Maxwell

The company steadily expanded increasing in size to employ over 1500 people, after merging, in the 1980s.

The factory closed in December 2005 after 120 years of printing with the loss of over 500 jobs.
