I've now almost completely rewritten this article, with particular emphasis on the queuing/game theory results. I have a friend who told me a story about an mutual acquaintance who was kept in a waiting room for two days waiting for a business meeting with a middle-eastern ruler, but it's far too FOAFy and WP:OR to use here. There is lots more that can be said: for example, excessive earliness can also be impolite, since it may be seen as an implied rebuke to other attendees, or an unwarranted demand on the host's time.
