Punjab Police (India) is well known for Violation of Human Rights and Civil Librities in Punjab.
[edit] Custodial deaths fifth highest in Punjab: NHRC
National Human Rights Commission in their annual report recently, it clearly show that the men in khaki have not been able to keep a tab on the rising number of deaths in custody. Punjab ranks fifth in terms of custodial deaths with the minimal death rate of 2.04 in 2003.

After the British annexed Punjab in 1849, the Punjab Police was created as a separate unit after 1861. The Punjab Police was closely involved in the operations against the separatist Khalistani insurgency in the 1980s and the 1990s and had been accused of carrying out extensive violations of Human Rights during these operations. [1]
On Friday, November 18, 2005, six Punjab Police officials were convicted in the 1995 abduction and murder of Jaswant Singh Khalra.[2]
