Pump It Up Pro (abbreviated as PIUPRO or Pump Pro, and marketed as Pump it up PRO) is a game in the Pump It Up series. The product is "a branch of the Pump It Up brand"[1] that does "not have an effect on the classic Pump It Up" games. Pump It Up Pro was designed with the intent of getting players who normally play 4-panel dance games into 5-panel dancing. The game utilizes a build of StepMania 4 for its engine.
The game inherits some features from the previous In the Groove games, such as support for USB flash drives (for edits and statistics), rolls and mines, percentage based scoring, an additional "Superb" judgement, and the usage of buttons on the cabinet to navigate instead of the pad. Due to StepMania's incomplete support for Pump It Up's distinct features, functions such as per-difficulty level speed changes are not available, and holds are judged in a more DDR like style (requiring the holding of the hold to begin at the arrow, but still using the combo system for the scoring on them). The game also includes an additional Easy difficulty, slotted in below Normal mode.
Due to it using StepMania 4 as its engine, the game also contains an additional undocumented arrow type unused by the game, Lift arrows, which require being held down and then lifted as it passes through the receptors. The implementation of them was incomplete as of the build of StepMania used, so lift arrows do not actually count towards or affect combos on Pro.
The game also features a "Progressive" mode, featuring themed courses containing scripted modifiers to make them more difficult.
Notable contributors include Kyle Ward, who also contributed many songs and step charts. A sequel was confirmed on a blog post on his website [2]
