The Pump House Brewery is a group of beer brewing and bar/catering business, it was opened as a brewpub in downtown Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada in 1999 by the co-owners Shaun Fraser, a local fire department chief, and his wife Lilia Fraser, currently the general manager. They debuted in style on New Year's Eve with the first new beer of the millennium. The Swiss chef Kurt Wermelinger has been leading the catering team since its opening.
The beer quality took another great step forward when Brewmaster Daniel Girard, newly graduated from VLB-Berlin, took over the management of all beer production duties in August 2001, since then he has designed all the new products and redesigned all the old. The Brewpub grew so popular that expansion was necessary. In July 2002, a brewing/bottling plant was built outside the city centre and production began in the same year. A gausthaus/restaurant was also established later on the plant site, called the Barn Yard BBQ.
Brewer Qian Zhang joined the brewing team in early 2003 and now is exclusively in charge of producing smaller batch regular beers and all seasonal beers. The other team member Assistant Brewer Glenn Kervin, apart from his regular brewing work, is also responsible for equipment installation and maintenance tasks.
The Pump House made a huge splash during its first time show-up at the annual Canadian Brewing Awards in 2005. It captured 9 medals in 6 different categories, included in this were 6 gold and 3 bronze. By gaining the first spot in both gold and total tally, it won the coveted title of Canada's "Brewery of the Year". The Awards are the only contest that invites breweries of every size from all parts of Canada to compete against each other in a blind tasting and see who truly brews the best in the land.
Currently the Pump House, with over 50 full-time employees, distributes beer across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. Pump House brewery is no longer distributing in Ontario, and is looking to possibly expand into Quebec.
