[edit] Mar Thoma IX

Is this the same person as Mar Thoma IX? The two articles are somewhat confusingly written, but one possible interpretation is that the same man became "Mar Thoma IX" and then later changed his name to "Pulikottil Joseph Mar Dionysious". If that is so, the articles should be merged; if it isn't, some explanation is in order (e.g. why does this article describe the death and burial of Thoma but not of Dionysious). –Henning Makholm 20:18, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Also, what's with the I-but-II-in-parentheses title? It sounds like there is a story here that deserves telling in an encyclopedia. –Henning Makholm 20:24, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

The official title given to the Head of Malankara Church when he is enthroned is Mar Thoma. For Pulikottil Joseph Mar Dionysious the official title given was Mar Thoma X. Before he was selcted as a bishop he was Joseph Ittoop Kathanaar (Rev). He was from Kunnamkulam Pulikottil family. So when he became a bishop he chose the episcopal title Pulikottil Joseph Mar Dionysious and he is generally known by that name.

For more information see Mar Thoma Church, Marthoma Metropolitans.

Other discrepancies.

  1. Mar Thoma IX and X. - Kadamattathu Ipe Kathanar was enthroned as Mar Thoma IX by Mar Thoma VIII without the approval of the people and the clergy. Some people still do not accept him as a Mar Thoma and such people call Pulikottil Joseph Mar Dionysious as Mar Thoma IX.
  2. I-but-II-in-parentheses title. – Another predecessor, Mar Thoma VI (1765-1808) was also known as Dionysious. The author is not sure whether to accept this previous one also as Dionysious.
  3. Orthodox Church – During that period the church was called Malankara church and not Malankara Orthodox church. The name Orthodox Church was used by Jacobite faction sometime after the visit to Kerala by Mor Ignatius Abded-Mshiho II of Antioch in 1912.

There are other discrepancies also in this article and that of Mar Thoma IX. Both need complete overhauling.Neduvelilmathew (talk) 18:17, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
