The unique ecology of the famous sand dunes is being preserved where the estuary and lagoon meet the dunes just south of town. There is a legend that known as "The Legend of El Milagro" that the dunes did not exist until a mysterious breeze carried the sand across Baja. It is documented that the dune sand is not from the Pacific Ocean but rather from the sea of Cortez many, many miles away. How it got here is a "miracle".

Puerto Nuevo is a short 10 minute drive south of Rosarito, with colorful shops, great beaches and good surf spots. A relatively undeveloped area, it retains its charm and is seeing lower density building with preservation of open spaces.
