Puente Nuevo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Puente Nuevo, whose name means "new bridge" in Spanish, is the newer and larger of two bridges that span the 120m-deep chasm that divides the city of Ronda in southern Spain. The bridge was built in 1751 and took a total of 42 years to build. The bridge is supposedly one of the most photographed structures in Spain. During the civil war that gripped Spain between 1936 - 1939 the nationalist forces under Franco threw the republicans from the bridge to their deathes in the chasm far below at the bottom of the El Tajo canyon.
The older, smaller bridge is the Puente Viejo which now carries only pedestrians.
