Puente Nacional is a town and municipality in the Santander Department in northeastern Colombia. It was created on the 8th of February 1556 by Andrés Díaz Venero .

Every 8th of May the town celebrates the start of the revolution and the war to independence . On that day in the church the mass is read in latin.

The town was first named 'Puente Real de Vélez' after the town's Bridge which was crossed by Simon Bolivar during the Battle of Boyaca.

The town is the cradle of the type of music called Guabina

The towns main attractions are the Church of Santa Barbara (Saint Barbara)and it's park Lelio Olarte and the numerous houses which surround it with the church at his head .

Other touristic attractions are just outside of the town ,and are the numerous caves in the local area.The town has a famous source of Thermal Waters .

Puente Nacional , in the department of Santander ,is at 225 Km of the department's capital Bucaramanga and 165 Km from Bogotá , The country's Capital . The town is in the province of Velez.

In the North of the town are Guavatá y Barbosa

In the East are Moniquira y Santa Sofia

In The west are Albania y Jesus Maria

The town's centre is at 1590 metres above sea level. The town is on the banks of the Suarez River.The average temperature is 22°C

The town's flag are three horizontal green horizontal green lines and two horizontal golden lines between them .The three green lines signify faith ,trust and respect. The two golden lines signify the freedom of man after the battle of the 8th of May.
