Publius Cornelius Scipio (disambiguation)

The name Publius Cornelius Scipio was commonly given by the Scipio branch of the gens Cornelia to the eldest son in each generation, although this was not always obeyed. At first most of the Scipios who became consuls were not named Publius, probably because the eldest son rarely survived to adulthood.[1] At least eleven men bearing this name have been identified in Livy and Polybius, of whom eight men were consuls (and a ninth consular tribune at a time when there were no consuls). Of the eight men, three were censors. Of these three, two were famous generals. Two of the men, father and son, became Pontifex Maximus successively.

  1. Publius Cornelius Scipio, consular tribune 395 BC, first Scipio to be named in Livy; was Master of the Horse to Marcus Furius Camillus.

  3. Publius Cornelius Scipio, consul 218 BC; he was married to Pomponia, a daughter of Manius Pomponius Matho, by whom he had at least two sons.
  4. Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, or Scipio Africanus, famous general, defeated Hannibal of Carthage at Zama, elder son of the previous. He was married to Aemilia Paulla, daughter of Lucius Aemilius Paullus (consul 219 BC) and sister of Aemilius Paullus Macedonicus.
  5. Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica, consul 191 BC and a cousin of Africanus; he was the son of Gnaeus Cornelius Scipio Calvus; his wife was possibly a Caecilia Metella.
  6. Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus (augur), elder surviving son of no.4
  7. Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica Corculum, consul 162 BC and 155 BC; censor 159 BC; Pontifex Maximus; son of no.5. He was married to his second cousin Cornelia Africana Major, elder daughter of Scipio Africanus.
  8. Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus Africanus Numantinus (Scipio the Younger, or Scipio Aemilianus), adoptive son of no. 6, and adoptive grandson of no.7
  9. Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica Serapio, consul 138 BC, and Pontifex Maximus; son of no.7 and grandson maternally of no.4 (Scipio Africanus)
  10. Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica (consul 111 BC), son of the previous. He was married to Caecilia Metella Macedonica Minor, daughter of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus.
  11. Publius Cornelius Scipio Nasica, praetor 94 BC, son of the previous. He was married to Licinia Minor, younger daughter of Lucius Licinius Crassus.
  12. Publius_Cornelius_Scipio_Salvito, consul 35 BC, former husband of Scribonia whose connection to the above is not clear.
