Category:Public schools in Northern Ireland
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Member schools of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) located in Northern Ireland. The vast majority of member schools of the HMC throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland are fee-paying establishments which enjoy independence from the state. However, in Northern Ireland, all member schools are categorized as Voluntary Granmmar Schools which surrendered an element of their independence in order to accept monies from government. There are two types: Voluntary B schools which receive only monies for teaching staff and maintenance (Campbell College and RBAI are both Voluntary B) and Voluntary A schools which also receive some monies for capital expenditure, that is, building development. Unlike Voluntary B schools, those in the second category have to forgo certain independence by accepting board members appointed by the Department of Education, Northern Ireland.. The term "public school" is meaningless in the Northern Irish context.
