[edit] Invisibility reference

"As the player progresses through the game, Raz acquires new psychic powers, including telekinesis, invisibility (perhaps a reference to the Invisible Woman of the Fantastic Four), pyrokinesis, clairvoyance, and confusion." (I've boldened the relevant text).

It could just as likely be a reference to Hollow Man, or The Invisible Man, or perhaps it's just a cool and interesting power to give Raz, like pyrokinesis and clairvoyance. My point is, I highly doubt it was included in the game as a reference to a 1960s comic-book superhero, or even less so to a movie which was very recently released. And if it wasn't a direct reference, I feel it should be removed as trivial information which can be easily learned from the invisibility article included there. Thoughts? – Quoth 01:37, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Keep it in. It MAY BE USEFUL. - Angie Y.

Well if it's clearly not a reference, that statement would be incorrect, and being so, should be removed. How is that statement more useful than the article on invisibility? Also, if you're going to include "useful" snippets of information for the power of invisibility, why not the less well known powers too, like pyrokinesis? One's that might need extra explanation. That is, if we're not going to rely on the linked articles. We're not just trying to include all the information we can in an article, but trying to include everything relevant in the most succinct fashion possible. There should also be as little conjecture ("perhaps", "maybe", "possibly") in articles as possible, since people come to an encyclopedia to read facts. I apologise if I sound harsh. – Quoth 03:56, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

delete - I must agree with Quoth here - I played through Psychonauts (and loved it). There is no clear reference to the Fantastic Four's Invisible Woman in the game, and with many "invisible" references in our popular culture it's arbitrary to pick one and attach it to this article. Sorry Angie - I vote with Quoth, strike the reference. JustinHall 16:10, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I'm going to say delete it as well. There's no indication the invisibility is a reference to ANYTHING. If there's no more objections, I'll get rid of it in a few days. --InShaneee 19:34, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • No more objections apparent, line now removed.

Delete this --Karimi 17:43, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bug report in trivia section

While I sympathize with the frustration felt when encountering a bug in software, is it appropriate for a detailed bug report like this to appear in the trivia section? Is it intended to be a warning for potential consumers of the PS2 version? If so, it could probably be rephrased more succinctly and put into the dev history section. -ERobson 06:26, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I did a quick survey of reviews of the PS2 version of the game, but only choppiness or framerate issues are mentioned. I'm deleting it from the trivia list. If they're actually widespread technical issues, feel free to add it back to the dev history section.Technitai 20:08, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Missing Characters

I noticed that the following characters were not listed :
Chloe Barge (thought she was from another planet)
Elton (don't know the last name, reads the minds of fish, relationship w/Milka)
Quentin and Phoebe (musicians of a band, found in the main lodge, argue over the band's name, Pheobe is a pyrokenetic with a short temper, Quentin is calm but his powers are unknown)
Edgar Teglee (he lost his girlfriend in high school and had so much anger he went crazy)
Gloria VonGouten (was an actress, lost her talent when her mother commited suicide, went crazy)
Fred Bonaparte (related to Napolean Bonaparte, was the orderly in the asylum, met a convict named Crispin who kept beating him at a board game called "Waterloo World" until Fred went crazy and started to think he was Napolean)
Crispin Whytehead (drove Fred crazy and took his job as orderly)
Sheegor (works for Dr.Loboto because he has her turtle captive. She calls the turtle Mr.Pokeylope, but his name is Sam)
Also it was not mentioned that Milla had many children that all died when her house caught fire.

If someone could please put this information up, it would be very nice.

I put up a link at the bottom that has some of the characters, I don't have time to add them right now, could someoneelse add them ? --Karimi 16:49, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Storyline

I added the storyline but its incomplete and is probably incorrect since I've forgotten alot of what happened ingame. Could someone check it for syntax and if its correct? --Karimi 16:51, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

You left out a lot. But I'm not a wikipedian so it would be trolling for me to fix it-Alice

Wow, that's a depressing attitude to take. Is this not the encyclopedia that anyone can edit?-Jake

Well done, but it certainly needs work - and some of the characters' names are spelled wrong. I am a Wikipedian so I'll do a cleanup after I get some sleep. I've been playing this game too long! —EatMyShortz 17:21, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

This storyline section is FAAAAAAR too long IMO- it makes the Metal Gear Solid game summaries look short. I'll have a stab at shortening it soon. Hyperspacey 13:00(ish) 20 December 2006

Just edited the storyline section to remove the mention of Coach Oleander implanting the persona of the Milkman into Boyd. This isn't the case, as shown by one the vaults in Boyd's mind - he creates the Milkman persona himself after being fired from his job as a guard. He then gets placed in a mental asylum. It is only at this point that Coach Oleander intervenes, by freeing him from the mental asylum and giving him a job as a guard (it's also implied that Oleander takes steps to reawaken the Milkman, even though this is ultimately done by Raz). Admittedly, Oleander may have given Boyd the name 'Milkman' and encouraged its growth, but saying that he implanted it himself gives the wrong idea, Boyd is certainly largely to blame.

I shortened the plot, let me know if you like it or not. TDS18 20:51, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Not sure if my input is really appreciated, but... there's a piece of the Storyline segment that kinda bugged me when I saw it... 'Once on the island...' ... I realize you do 'take Lungfish' (or Ford Teleport) to go back and forth, but I thought the asylum was merely 'on the other side of the lake' not 'in the middle of the lake', which would actually imply an island (the 'on the other side' not implying anything about an island)... and going through the lake (or just teleporting)is just faster than walking all the way around the lake (if they even allowed it in-game... there'd probably be a hell of a lot more psychic animals trying to get over to the asylum that way, too). 76.114.184.239 (talk) 04:51, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Minor characters in Psychonauts

The list of characters is now huge, and contains minute details about all the minor minor characters. While this is all good, I think it clutters up the main page too much, so I'd suggest moving not just these but *all* the characters (except Raz, who has his own article) to a "Minor characters in Psychonauts" article. There they can be expanded more and put into headings, etc. I'll do it tomorrow if nobody objects. —EatMyShortz 17:25, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

No objections , I think there should be a better title though. Maybe "Psychonaut Characters" and it could link to raz and have the rest there ?--Karimi 17:44, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

  • Well, you could be right. The name "Minor characters in Psychonauts" seems to be wiki standard tho (although some use "from" instead of "in": see Minor characters in Monkey Island, Minor characters in Star Wars, Minor characters in Seinfeld, Minor characters from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But I agree, we're planning to put all characters (except Raz) on there, so we may as well call it "Psychonauts Characters" although personally I'd prefer "Characters in/from Psychonauts".
    • On a minor note of reply thanks for your comment on my userpage, Karimi. You've been instrumental on expanding this page, and it's good to work with you - I look forward to making the discussed changes with you to tighten things up more. —EatMyShortz 12:26, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
    • I think in/from is the best, I think "in" is more correct, but maybe its just me.--Karimi
    • Done - moved all the Characters info to Characters in Psychonauts. Now that its on its own page we can clean it up and expand with headings all over the place without over-complicating the Psychonauts article. I'll start doing that now. Also this discussion should be continued over on Talk:Characters in Psychonauts. —EatMyShortz 15:30, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] European Release Date

Don't know whether EatMyShortz' comment was aimed at my changing the European release date, but it did actually get a 10th Feb release in the UK (got my copy today lol). Don't know whether this sticks for the rest of Europe, but I would guess it does. —Coined 19:44, 11 February 2006 (GMT)

[edit] Gamecube comment

"It has been questioned by some fans why the game was not released on the Nintendo GameCube considering the buying trends of GameCube owners gravitate towards high quality titles like the game in question."

'High-quality titles'? I'm assuming a Gamecube owner wrote that. Regardless, it is pure opinion since plenty of decent games have flopped on the Cube, while others like Mario Party 7 get snapped up. This part of the article needs omitted, IMO.

This should be removed, 1 its more of an opinion than a fact. 2 It adds nothing to the article. At most what should be said is "It has not been released on the gamecube." and even that is not needed. I say remove it --Karimi 16:51, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

I agree this should be removed (again, someone just reverted it). Though I didn't really like the replacement. I'm guessing a more accurate statement would be "Some fans bemoaned the fact it was not released for the GameCube as it is their preferred system." Elusivespoon 15:24, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree with what Elusivespoon has said, it looks like a much more plausible argument. If I owned a Gamecube I would simply want the game, that would be logical, I wouldn't start an ideological debate upon the general quality preference of other Gamecube owners. I do not think Gamecube owners (or owners of any other console for that matter) are in any 'better' position than other console owners, that is not quite right. I vote for Elusivespoon's version. AdamDobay 19:22, 3 March 2006 (UTC)
It didn't originally say that. It use to say "It has been questioned by some fans why the game was not released on the Nintendo GameCube considering the buying trends of GameCube owners tend toward kid-friendly platformers". Jedi6 22:35, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

I would have thought it had been obvious why it wasn't released on the Cube- storage space. GameCube games can only hold 1.5 gig on a single disc, and the abundance of speech in Psychonauts would have been too large to ship on one disc.

Wow, I think that's important information here, I wonder if it should be included in the article. AdamDobay 16:35, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
1.5 is bigger than that. There are plenty of games that hold tons of voice work on The GameCube. Jedi6-(need help?) 19:25, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
As much as Psychonauts though? Forgive me as I haven't finished the game yet, but I'm comparing it to Grim Fandango, which was on two 700mb discs with much cruder graphics. The majority of Cube games with large amounts of voice acting are held on two discs (Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos etc). Though if they could fit Beyond Good and Evil on one disc, then I suppose it could be possible.
The disc space argument is a reasonable one, but I would imagine there were larger market forces at work here. Rufous 08:54, 20 March 2006 (UTC)
But Baten Kaitos and Tales of Symphonia are large RPGs while Psychonauts is a 20 hour platformer. All that data could be held on one disk. The problem you present was Nintendo's big problem during the N64 days. Jedi6-(need help?) 00:38, 21 March 2006 (UTC)
Like I said, I was primarily using Grim Fandango to compare. Eh, probably the main reason for staying to PS2 and Xbox was market- Cube games not made by Nintendo do not sell, as a general rule. Sad.
I don't think it's a matter of the disk size...I actually pondered this while looking at the buttons on the Gamecube controller and I don't think there are enough buttons to actually PLAY the game. If I remember right, the PS2 uses the D-Pad, both analog sticks, all four of the shoulder buttons, the four shape buttons (of course), start, select, R3 and L3. Gamecube, however, does not have as many shoulder buttons, lacks "analog buttons" and a separate select button.
(undent) I think the real problem was the amount of work it would take to get down to the Cube level. There would be enough buttons to play the game, but they'd have to overhaul the control system completely. Market forces probably play in, too, but only to the extent that it would cost too much to port a Cube version for such a low return. The target audiences of the two are just not the same.
--150.208.77.253 15:36, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

My point is made. Hope this made you think too. --66.136.181.57 05:01, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] PC Gamer magazine

PC Gamer is sold in many countries around the world. Each one created using a combination of it's own material and syndicated material. I think it should be indicated which nationality of PC Gamer gave the award "Best Game You Didn't Play 2005"

[edit] Friendster

I would like to find the Friendster profiles mentioned in the article, but I've only been able to find one. Could someone put a link to them?

  • Try this The Friendster profiles were taken down, but the forum that this link takes you to has links to the My Space version of the profiles. X201 11:19, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Steam

This game was added to Steam (content delivery) on Oct 11, 2006. It'll be good if someone would edit the Article Page and add Information about it. (I Already Edited the Infobox) --User:Subbu.exe 10:56, 11 October 2006 (GMT +5.5)

Tim Schafer first conceived the idea for Psychonauts while working on Full Throttle, which originally was to have an interactive peyote trip sequence. The idea was deemed unsuitable for a family-friendly game, but it led to Schafer's desire to do a game featuring psychological trips or interactive dream sequences.

i would not consider full throttle as family friendly; anyway there is a citation needed

[edit] Ford Cruller based on Herman Toothrot

The character Ford Cruller seems to be loosely based on Monkey island's Herman Toothrot to me, anything worth adding to the trivia section? -Obli (Talk)? 01:35, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Hmm...Maybe. But Cruller has more of an identity crises than amnesia- although, in a sense, his other personas suffer from amnesia... MsDevin92 13:49, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sales Needs Its Own Section

The disappointing sales of this game come up somewhat regularly in game development circles; the disconnect between the game's critical acclaim and its number of titles shipped is a valuable data point for the games industry and its watchers. Okami, a game in a similar situation, has a header "Reception", with "Reviews", a sub-section under that called "Awards", and a second sub-header under Reception, "Sales". Regardless if this article adopts that structure (getting reliable sales data on Psychonauts is hard anyway), the sales should be given its own section, not just a throw-away sentence under the largely-unrelated header "Development History". I'll do this restructuring with any comments anyone has in a couple of days. NewlandArcher 01:37, 4 April 2007 (UTC) Done! I also performed some other restructuring; let me know if there are any problems. I suspect that the "plot summary" has a bad case of TMI, but I didn't take a buzzsaw to it yet. Thanks!NewlandArcher 20:46, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Good job Portillo (talk) 09:15, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Levels need their own section?

Considering the levels in this game are so unique and a big part of its appeal, shouldn't there be a section just for them? Just a thought. SpiderSlayer 07:23, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Trivia Section

The article's trivia section contains the statement:

Several characters' last names mean "no", "none" or "nothing", including Bobby Zilch and Sasha Nein.

As far as I can tell from looking through the article Characters in Psychonauts, these characters are the only two. This bullet point should probably provide more or different examples... otherwise I don't think two counts as "several", or is grounds for a trivia point (more likely a coincidence in my opinion).

  • Most of the trivia section is completely biased. The person who wrote it probably just sees coincidences between the game and real life and decided to post them, without ANY solid evidence.

[edit] Psychonauts Userboxes

I've created two Psychonauts userboxes. I have many ideas for them, but I've decided that, at least for now, I'll stick with two. They're nothing fancy, but if anyone wants to use them, here they are. If anyone has any comments on them, please use my talk page.

Code Result

[edit] Scott Cambell

The infobox correctly states that the art designer for Psychonauts is Scott Campbell, however the link goes to the article for the musician Scott Campbell. Either get rid of the link or make a Scott Campbell (artist) article. --Marshmello 19:27, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] The world shall taste my Eggs vault

The "Notes" section refers to this as the memory of an anonymous chick, but it seemed to me to actually be a messed up summary of Oleander's plans. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.117.169.232 (talk) 01:16, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Bones

The "setting" section mentions that the psitanium deposits mutated all the wildlife, specifically mentioning the bears and cougars. I thought it would be more visually appealing to have three examples, so I was going to add something I learned from the scavenger hunt dinosaur bone: that a few million years ago, the area that would one day be Camp Whispering Rock was home to velociraptors who could Levitate. I was actually in the process of typing it when it occured to me that the big log in front of the camp said the psitanium meteor only landed a few hundred years ago. Anyone know what's up with this, or (more likely) am I just thinking too hard about this? Master Deusoma (talk) 21:02, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Statement. Best Game?

"While the game suffered from poor sales and caused Majesco to exit the console market, Psychonauts received strong praise and is considered one of the best games of all time."

This needs to be fixed. While Psychonauts may be a good game, it is far from even considered one of the best games of all time. It has no standing against greats such as the Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy. This statement is ridiculous and un-supported. It's Opinion and if you ask the industry greats and profession reviewers, none would list this game in thier top 5. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lucifer chris (talk • contribs) 12:13, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

It's not a top 5 game, but has been listed in several top 100 game lists. --MASEM 14:24, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ported?

Saying the game was "ported" to windows is very strange, given that it was released very shortly after the Xbox version. Although Xbox was probably the main target platform for the game, the word "ported" is more commonly used for when you take an existing, finished game and alter it so that it runs on a new platform, not when a game is originally targeted for multiple platforms.

(I know that inside gaming companies, porting may have the more technical meaning of "making the game run on more than the primary platform", but I dont think that is the most common interpretation of the word)

Or am I wrong?
