Talk:Psychology/rewrite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a rewrite of the Psychology page as of 10/2005. Please post any suggestions for revisions on this talk page.
[edit] Initial revisions
1) I would suggest getting rid of the lists of things. If people feel they are important, we could create separate page for lists of particular psychology topics. But I don't think long lists belong on the main Psychology page.
2) The categories listed at the bottom include Psychotherapy and Body Psychotherapy. Since, these would be sub-categories of psychology, I don't think they should be listed as categories that psychology is a member of.
3) I'm not sure the Areas and Approaches in the table on the right side accurately reflects the way Psychology is traditionally divided up. Can someone tell me whether Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Transpersonal Pyschology are really main approaches in the field? I have never heard of them, but it could just be me. --dzou 17:26, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
- Transpersonal isn't, the other two sort of are, or rather were. I don't think they are very popular right now, many think that all these fields are sort of unscientific. --Heida Maria 15:58, 19 October 2005 (UTC)

- OK, I agree. Here is my proposal for defining the sub-fields of psychology:
- Developmental - Cognitive (including Sensation & Perception and Cognitive Neuroscience) - Social & Personality - Clinical & Health - Applied (including Human Factors & and Industrial/Organizational)
Have I left anything major out? One way to come up with an accurate list would be to look at how the APA/NSF/NIH divide the areas of psychology. I based this list on my experience as to how graduate programs are traditionally divided. I think it should be broad without being over-specific. The last thing we want is more long lists...
The current list has separate entries for Areas and Approaches. I suggest we just have one section called "Sub-fields of Psychology" that lists these fields. The specific approaches used in each area could then be described in that area's section.

- So, after writing that, I realized that I don't know what is generating that table on the right-side of the article. I can't seem to find anything in the article itself that is making it. I'll look around the wikipedia help pages to figure out how to change it. --dzou 22:26, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
- Found it. It is the Psychology template. I've changed it to be more accurate. --dzou 23:40, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Replace psychology main article
I've added a lot of content and given the article (what I think) is an organized layout. I think I'll start replacing the article on the main page, but I would be interested in others thoughts. --dzou 23:08, 20 October 2005 (UTC)
- I've replaced the content on the main page with the changes made here. From now on, please edit the main Psychology page instead of this one. --dzou 18:20, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

- Since this statement was made, no visible improvements to Psychology (rewrite) have been made that have not been reflected on the main (Psychology) page, and additional extensive editing to that page have been done, so Psychology (rewrite) has fulfilled its purpose and has apparently outlived its usefulness. -DoctorW 05:52, 24 November 2005 (UTC)
