[edit] Distribution
Pseudolaguvia is not a diverse group, and this diversity is confined to a small area.[1] Pseudolaguvia species are distributed in the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and east and south to the Sittang drainage, Myanmar.[2] P. ferula inhabits the Brahmaputra drainage, northeast India.[3] P. foveolata originates from the Tista River, Brahamputra River basin, India.[4] P. inornata is known from the Feni River basin, Bangladesh.[1] P. kapuri is from the Padhoi River and Dhamola River, Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.[5] P. muricata inhabits the Brahmaputra River basin, Bangladesh.[1] P. ribeiroi is distributed in the Teesta River system, north Bengal, the Kosi River system Behar, the Rihand River system, Uttar Pradesh, and rivers of Nepal. R. shawi originates from North Bengal, India, and Bangladesh and the Brahmaputra River basin, Assam, India.[5] P. tenebricosa is presently only known from a fast-flowing hill stream called Pathe Chaung, near Taungoo in southern Myanmar.[6] P. tuberculata is from the Myitkyina District, Kachin State, Myanmar.[5]
[edit] Description
Externally, these fish resemble members of the sisorid catfish genus Glyptothorax.[1] Pseudolaguvia is diagnosed by the presence of a short thoracic adhesive apparatus with median depression; wide gill openings nearly meeting one another on the underside of the body; serrations on anterior margin of pectoral fin spine pointing toward tip; smooth to granulate anterior margin on the dorsal fin spine; slender body; papillate upper lip; and 8–10 anal fin rays.[2] Both the dorsal fin and pectoral fin have strong spines. The head and body are slightly depressed. The eyes are small, dorsal, and located in the middle of the head. The barbels are annulated with black rings.[2]
[edit] Ecology
Pseudolaguvia species inhabit hill streams and large rivers.[3] P. tenebricosa is found in fast running, clear water; the river has a sandy bottom and numerous rocks and boulders, and aquatic vegetation is absent.[6] P. inornata is from clear, shallow, moderately flowing streams with a predominantly sandy bottom.[1] P. muricata is found in clear, shallow, slow-flowing streams with a mixed substrate of sand and detritusl; these fish are found amongst detritus in areas with current.[1] P. ferula is also found in swift flowing waters with a mixed rocky/sandy bottom.[3]
