[edit] Facilities
The library at Psalter Lane specialises in the arts and media. The special collections include an original of Stubbs' The Anatomy of the Horse (1766) and a collection of photographs from the miners strike. This collection is available to view on request. The campus also possesses two galleries, both open to the public, which have regular art exhibitions.
The campus has various services available in other areas, such as a large number of computers and Wifi availability around the campus. The canteen, Steeleys, serves hot and cold food throughout the day.
[edit] Future
Psalter Lane is currently up for sale and Sheffield Hallam University is in the process of relocating the faculty of ACES (Arts, Computing, Engineering and Science) from Psalter Lane to City Campus. As part of this move, a new building on Furnival Street is planned to be completed in 2008. Sheffield Hallam University reasons this is necessary because "the Furnival Building (working title) will enable the faculty of ACES and the University as a whole to grow its business".[1]
[edit] Culture and opinion
Psalter Lane is considered by many[who?] who study there to be a campus with a great atmosphere, sense of community and personality. The proximity of the campus to cheap rented accommodation and the nearby area of Banner Cross gives students access to affordable accommodation and amenities while studying. Banner Cross is among students' favourite places to spend lunch.
However, Psalter Lane has also been considered by a minority[who?] of students the worst of the three campuses at Sheffield Hallam University. They cite reasons such as the lack of amenities nearby - currently 'The Psalter' pub is the only non-university commercial outlet immediately available to students - and the distance to the campus from the centre of Sheffield, where much of the student accommodation is based.
Sheffield Hallam Students Union had operated a bar known as The Wham Bar on the site until 2001 when, due to poor attendances, the facility was closed at the suggestion of the then Union President and the elected Executive Group.
[edit] Notable events in Psalter Lane history
In 1978, the site (then known as Sheffield Art College) hosted the debut gig by The Human League. ABC also performed live for the first time at Psalter Lane.
On the 7th July 2008 Psalter Lane Campus had a farewell party, where all the students and past graduates along side previous and present staff came together to celebrate the life of the building that is to be destroyed by August 2008.
