PSA XUD

The PSA XUD is a Diesel engine designed and built by PSA - Peugeot and Citroën. It is an Indirect Injection (IDI) engine, that uses a version of the Ricardo Consulting Engineers Ricardo Comet prechamber cylinder head design. The engine comes in 1769cc 1.8 N/A, 1.8 Turbo, 1905cc 1.9 N/A, 1.9 Turbo, 2.1 12 valve N/A and Turbo and 2.5 Turbo configurations, and was the predecessor to the HDI range of engines (developed jointly between Ford and PSA). The 1.9 has latterly been downsized to 1868cc.

Note: Peugeot 306 (phase 1 and 1.9 phase 2) diesels also uses these engines. Please note Rover 100/Metro, Peugeot 106, Citroën AX diesels used the much physically smaller TUD diesel engines, developed from the petrol PSA TU engine series in alloy block 1.4 and later iron block (after much head gasket/cylinder liner trouble) 1.5 versions, all naturally aspirated non-turbo in the UK.

Upon its release the engine was noted as one of the best Diesel engines (for cars and light vans) in the world with its high power output and refinement it made all other diesel engines seem agricultural . However if the service schedule was skipped the engine had a tendency to blow its head gasket as coolant changes on this engine are critical.

The engine when accompanied by a Bosch fuel pump can run on SVO (pure vegetable oil). The viscosity of vegetable oil when cold is too great for rotary injection pumps (in particular the weak Lucas pumps), preventing it acting as a lubricant and seizing up the distributor/rotary injection pump. In order to reduce the viscosity of the SVO it should be heated to engine coolant operating temperature, typically with a two tank system on order to start and shutdown on diesel or bio-diesel.
