[edit] coaching

Hi,

Im highly interested in admin coaching, as i would like to become an admin in the near future and also to learn about an admins roles, dutys and ethics. Following instuctions on the coaching page it was suggested that I contact an admin who hasnt got any coachees instead of waiting for things to be done for me. I was wondering if you had the time to admin coach me, I look foward to your reply, Cheers Prom3th3an (talk) 08:39, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Promethean,
Although I can't imagine why the answer would be anything other than "yes", I hope you don't mind if I take a short while to go through your contributions before I make it official.
I look forward to working with you.
Cheers - Revolving Bugbear 15:58, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I simply don't have enough time or energy to coach you. Revolving Bugbear should make an excellent coach. Nousernamesleftcopper, not wood 01:49, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello again Promethean,

I would be happy to coach you. If you'd be so kind, I'd like you to do a couple of things:

  1. Create a subpage of your talk page where we can work. This will keep your talk page from being clogged up. Y Done
  2. When creating that page, explain what you think are your best strengths and most significant weaknesses as a Wikipedian. Form and length are up to you. Y Done
  3. Watchlist my talk page and the talk page of a few admins whom you trust or admire. Much of what I have learned about Wikipedia I've learned just through observing other Wikipedians whose judgment I trust. Y Done

Once you have done these things, let me know. Y Done Cheers - Revolving Bugbear 20:41, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Prom3th3an, since it seems you've secured yourself an admin coach, which is really just like a higher-level and focused form of adoption, would it make sense to consider you at this time, a "graduate" of WP:AAU, and archive your adoption subpage? I've no problem continuing as your adopter if you so desire, but I'm not sure if it would make sense. My door would of course remain open for any future queries you may have. xenocidic (talk) 21:00, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
  • All of the above has been done :) you can find the coaching page on my adoption page (see the nav bar) Prom3th3an (talk) 04:00, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Left some thoughts and a couple of questions for you. We'll start this off sort of conversationally and move to specific technical topics after that, I think.

[edit] Userboxes

I like the userboxes, but I would support the creation of an additional one; I want one that says "This user is an investigator and contactor at Wikipedia:Abuse reports" instead of having to have both of them on my userpage. GO-PCHS-NJROTC (Messages) 12:55, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Statustop template: alternate updating method

SoxBot V has been taken offline indefinitely, therefore {{Statustop}} now uses a semi-manual updating method taking the status from Special:Mypage/Status. You can use the Qui monobook script written by TheDJ to update this page at the click of a button. Please feel free to drop by my talk page with any questions or concerns. Happy editing, xenocidic ( talk ¿ listen ) 13:47, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] editor review

Hey, i've reviewed your edits at Wikipedia:Editor review/Prom3th3an. Hope it's some help! Regards, Ironholds 14:24, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] WP:HAU

Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 22:31, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi, This indeed is disappointing news and one must wonder if I make 50k useful edits will I be blocked :)   «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™ |l»  01:40, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Your advice

Thanks for the details - useful if I get seriously involved. My one edit so far was to a stub on a subject I have many years experience of and where the references were outdated.

May return to it to see if a full entry if worth a try.

[edit] Thanks!

Hey Prom3than, I just wanted to thank you for your participation in my RFA and dropping by my talk page with teh congrats. If you're interested, take a look at my in-depth RFA analysis, it may help you as you prepare. also, i'll talk to bugbear about having me on as an "assistant coach" especially to address 'CMR' and such. also, enjoy the templated thank spam below. xenocidic (talk) 12:43, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Reply to message sent

Hi Prom3th3an, I received this message, sent on May 28th :

The recent edit you made to Lostprophets constitutes vandalism, and has been reverted. Please do not continue to vandalize pages; use the sandbox for testing. Thanks. Prom3th3an (talk) 08:04, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Just wanted to say, I've never even looked at the Lostprophets page, much less edited it. Think you may have sent this to the wrong person. Thanks, and keep up the good work lol. hattiFATALE

  • Hi, I do beleive you on some parts (that you never looked at the lostprophets page) however I have good reason to beleave that you have stumbed upon someone elses message and it was never directly assigned to you. You see that warning was issued to an IP address. An IP address is a number that is assigned to your modem when you connect to the internet, in most cases the IP address you get one day, wont be the same IP you get the next time you re-conenct. So there is a good chance that the IP address concerned was being used by a vandal not long before you were assigned it. Just disregard this warning as it is obviously not intended for you. Cheers   «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™ |l»  01:31, 7 June 2008 (UTC)

You may want to toss this userbox somewhere to keep you up to date on adoption backlog:

[edit] Concerning 217.87.x.x

Hi,

Excuse me writing here. I'm quite new to wikipedia and registered only for the purpose of communicating with you. I hope this is the right place. I've just been surfing around on wp and got the new message warning leading me to this link. And then I got there. I am in the 217.87.*.*-range, too. It's one of the huge ranges of the biggest German isp - tcom fka. Deutsche Telekom. The 217.237.150.11* range is the range of a public proxy any tcom customer may use (www-proxy.t-online.de). I often use this proxy for speed reasons, and that's basically the reason I got the new message warning and now write here.. The last digit of the ip usually varies, depending on where the abuser lives. Every larger node usually has 3 different possible last digits afaik. The ip can even vary on every refresh. In my area the ip varies from 217.237.150.116 - 217.237.150.118.

To make a long story short: the proxy is transparent, so why not look up and log the abusers real ip? Blocking the whole range would not be a good solution - please only punish those who deserve to be punished. I often have to use this proxy and people like this guy annoy me, as they abuse two systems that are intended to have a good purpose - what a scumbag :(

Once you have this guy's real ip in your logs, you might consider contacting the tcom security team directly with hard evidence at:
phone: +49 180 5334332
fax-no: +49 180 5334252
e-mail: abuse@t-ipnet.de
They are usually very friendly and they help unbureaucratically and fast if you provide hard evidence (timestamped logs).

Kind regards & keep me posted,

[edit] Response to message of 8 june, re: Adoption

Hi Prom3th3an, thanks for contacting me regarding this issue. I have renamed my account in the past, changing from the account User:Urbane User to the one that I have now. When the edits that are listed under that name are combined with the edits from this account, I have more than 500 edits. Furthermore I am an adminstrator on the english wikibooks, and have a more than proficient knowledge of wikipedia policy. Thank you for following up this issue, it is good to have someone checking that the adoption guidelines are being followed. I hope that this answers your questions.

[edit] Adoption

With pleasure. (PS, do you know how to fix the UBX section of my user page?) Sexy Sea Bassist 17:02, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

actually, I meant fix it so it stretches with addition of new userboxes Sexy Sea Bassist 17:11, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Just a note, be careful not to fall into a trap and adopt too many adoptees. I'm going to sleep now, just thought I should let you know :) Steve Crossin (talk)(email) 17:21, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Steve, I have 2 adoptees. I hardly call that "Too many". Also please observe the notice at the top of my page. Ive seen users with 8 adoptees. Thanks   «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™ |l»  17:23, 8 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Yea, I didn't say you had too many :). I was just letting you know, as I've seen it happen before. You're doing well. Steve Crossin (talk)(email) 17:51, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] "Wikiterrorism"

Regarding this post to WP:AIV, can I request you use less dramatic language in future. This was a very ordinary case of page blanking vandalism, and inflammatory language like this just boosts vandals' egos. I see you made the AIV report using Huggle; in cases of simple vandalism like this, it's easiest for all concerned if you allow Huggle to use its default summary ("vandalism"). Thanks! – iridescent 19:56, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Oh please, lighten up a little. I used the term wikiterrorism because this IP user obviously hated wikipedia. (as seen in his posts)I think that if half the vandals checked WP:AIV for comments like that it would be protected cause the vandals would have removed reports. But never the less I'll take you comments into consideration :-)   «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™ |l»  00:05, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Personal Info

Just to let you know, its best not to have your real life name on Wikipedia. Some people do, (personally I don't, contrary to popular belief). Anyway, just letting you know. Steve Crossin (talk)(email) 05:20, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Guncat.gif

Thank you for uploading Image:Guncat.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by an adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. MBisanz talk 07:13, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Userpage

Not bad, but you should probably attribute to whom you pilfered it from. Also, note that one fairly common concern raised at RFA is time spent editing one's userpage - keep that in mind. xenocidic (talk) 14:35, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Yeah well I think thats absolute crap to be honest, I've seen to many RFA's where the opposers are to busy frolicking over things like that and not the persons ability, trust etc. Besides my userpage needed a revamp as it was hard to navigate and the colour scheme was awful, the new design not only looks better but is also easyer to use, especialy for my adoptee's. If Adminship comes down to "How many times have you revamped your userpage" (twice) then i dont want anything to do with adminship.   «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™ |l»  14:43, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
True enough. As for your sig, you should add a link directly to your talk page. Perhaps the "™" could link there. xenocidic (talk) 15:01, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
  • Don't mind me, Its been a long day and it just frustrates me how some admins treat adminship as a high rollers club (not you).   «l| Ψrom3th3ăn ™|l»  (talk) 15:11, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
