[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Duke.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Duke.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Durin 00:29, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

I think that the image will prove a useful addition to the pages about Java. I will be expanding its usage, as well as article devoted to it, in the near future. Please see below for information about the image being used on my user page.

[edit] Fair use image use

Please do not add fair use tagged images to your userpage as you did here with the now deleted Image:Gpcbutton.gif and here with Image:Apple_Safari.png. The use of fair use images in this manner is not permitted per Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. Thanks, --Durin 00:29, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

I have found myself legally entitled to use the image Image:Duke.gif in my user page according to the licensing information at http://logos.sun.com/logosite.jsp?Category=third because I am a Java developer. Pro Grape 05:33, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Unfortunately, it's not enough. Wikipedia:Fair use criteria simply does not allow it. If you can have the image released under a free license, then it can be allowed on a userpage. Else, it's not. The reason is that these sorts of allowed you create an ever increasingly nightmarish situation to manage. The line is clear; no fair use outside of main article namespace. Exceptions can be granted (in practice, they aren't), but must be requested and granted. I've removed the java logo. --Durin 13:17, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Claims of self creation of images

Several times now I have come across images of yours which you claim to have created yourself. For example, Image:Tazer vpp.jpg and Image:Duke.gif. Both of these two examples were not created by you. In the former case, the source image is at [1] and in the latter from Sun Microsystems as it is their logo for the Java programming language. Please stop tagging images which are not yours as being created by you. These are copyrighted images and tagging them as being created by you violates copyright law. If you are uncertain as to how to properly tag an image, by all means ask. But, please do not continue to upload images taken from other websites and claim them as yours. Thank you. --Durin 00:33, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Duke image

I noticed you recently uploaded Image:Duke.gif and included it in the Java (programming language) article and created a new Java mascot article to discuss it. I thought you should know that there already exists Image:Duke.wave.shadow.gif which is used on the Java (Sun) article. —Doug Bell talk 07:45, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Doug, thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't realized this, as there is another page Java (programming language) that seems largely to duplicate the Java (Sun) article. If this is the case, it has probably been a source of confusion for many, besides which we certainly don't need two articles on the same topic. Please, delete the mascot that I uploaded and I will fix any broken links (as I believe I have created all of the links to that image). Pro Grape 07:54, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Nevermind, the Java (programming language) is a sub-topic of Java (Sun). I hope you'll delete the image, though. The reason that I uploaded it in the first place is that I couldn't find that image already in use anywhere. Is there a way to search for images on the wik? Thanks. Pro Grape 08:00, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Java (Sun) and Java (programming language) cover two different aspects. Java (Sun) discusses the entire Java universe whereas Java (programming language) focuses soley on the programming language. —Doug Bell talk 08:01, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
You can search by typing what you want to search for in the search box and selecting the Search button. At the bottom of the search page that comes up you can refine your search by selecting the namespaces you want to search. This search searches only the image namespace on the term "Duke Java", and reveals the image link I gave above. —Doug Bell talk 08:06, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I will use that in the future. Do you think it is worth having a larger (though lower quality) version of the image for the article Java Mascot? Pro Grape 08:08, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
I don't know. I think the one with the shadow, although smaller, is nicer. BTW, I moved Java MascotJava mascot. You can read Wikipedia:Naming conventions (often referred to by the shortcut WP:NAME) to see the article naming conventions. —Doug Bell talk 08:20, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the referral to the literature. I agree with you about the mascot image, and I've replaced the one I uploaded with the original one. Pro Grape 08:24, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] re: A userbox bug?

Is this what you were hoping to get? AuburnPilottalk 08:41, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

This user agrees with some aspects of conservatism. conservative

Yes it is, but is it not possible to get the same result using the other code format? Thanks for your reply! —Pro Grape (talk) 08:50, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
I actually used the same format you provided on Wikipedia talk:Userboxes. I substituted the template format of the box into my sandbox, producing the code for the one you see here. Once the code is available, any of the information, including colors, can be changed without too much trouble. The color choices can be found here. AuburnPilottalk 08:59, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Well, I tried the substitution method that you linked to, and for whatever reason, the id text still came up black. So I simply copied the one you gave me. Thanks again! It works now! I think the answer to the question of whether the template is buggy for reverse userboxes is yes! —Pro Grape (talk) 09:13, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] re:signature testing [2]

I see you've already found the preferences tab and how to customize your signature, so it isn't too difficult from there. At the end of my signature, in the preferences tab, I added: <small>{{subst:CURRENTTIME}}, {{subst:CURRENTDAY}} {{subst:CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{subst:CURRENTYEAR}} ([[UTC]])</small>. Because templates are not to be used in signatures, the date templates must be substituted, especially since you wouldn't want the current date/time to show by your signature. You'd want the date/time when you left your comment. According to WP:SIG, templates are substituted automatically anyway, but better safe than sorry I guess. With the date included in my signature as default, I also sign with 3 tildes (~~~) instead of 4. The fourth tilde would produce a duplicate date. AuburnPilottalk 19:25, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Perfect! Thanks very much. As you can see, I've made the changes. —Pro Grape(talk) 19:49, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Venus_Capua,_-rtateNordisk_familjebok.png

Thank you for uploading Image:Venus_Capua,_-rtateNordisk_familjebok.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Fritz S. (Talk) 17:03, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:BlackLeopardRight.JPG

Thanks for uploading Image:BlackLeopardRight.JPG. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 18:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Iamunknown 18:35, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Virginia Tech massacre

Your change from VT to VPI broke interwiki links, commons links, and references. The school is not VPI and has not been VPI for almost 40 years. The legal name, until 1970, was Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Now, the full name is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with Virginia Tech being a recognized name for all but formal purposes. The only people who call the school VPI are old people and UVA fans. You can see a brief history of the school's name at [3]. --BigDT (416) 17:30, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Compass.jpg

Hello, Pro Grape. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Compass.jpg) was found at the following location: User:Pro Grape. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 22:43, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Duke.gif

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Duke.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 03:28, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Duke.gif. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

[edit] Image:Gpclogo.gif

I have tagged Image:Gpclogo.gif as {{no rationale}}, because it does not provide a fair use rationale. If you believe the image to be acceptable for fair use according to Wikipedia policy, please provide a rationale explaining as much, in accordance with the fair use rationale guideline, on the image description page. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you.
