[edit] 1. Check out a log file
- Go to User:ProteinBoxBot/PBB_Log_Index
- Claim a log file for yourself by adding ~~~~ (Example)
[edit] 2. Check flags
- Click on the log file link, then click on the link for the "Protein Status Grid"
- For each row (gene) in the table, check the Action Summary and find the correct section below.
[edit] 2a. Action: Created or Action: Updated
- Click the link in the WP Symbol Search column to confirm that an existing page did not already exist. (If necessary, flag for merging.)
- If the created or updated page has the "(gene)" suffix, check if the page without the suffix is an existing gene stub. (If necessary, flag for merging.)
- Click the link in the Target page(s) column. If the gene name is short and simple, move the gene page to that gene name. (Moving, of course, will create a redirect from the gene symbol to the gene name.)
[edit] 2b. Action: Manual Inspection
Find appropriate target page
- the "Target page(s)" column shows wikilinks to the gene symbol, name, and all aliases.
- if one of listed "Target page(s)" has “(protein box)” listed, then likely use that one (confirm Entrez Gene ID matches)
- if not, search all of WP for gene name using the link in the fourth column (confirm Entrez Gene ID matches)
- The Prefixindex page may also be helpful (Example)
- if all else fails, create the page using the gene symbol, gene name, or common alias. (Preference should be given to gene names over symbols when a clear and succinct name is available.)
Update page
- In the protein grid, click the "Action Summary" link to view the auto-generated PBB content.
- if you are creating new page, then copy and paste all PBB content, save, then continue to next section below
- if existing page already has protein box, overwrite it with the PBB protein box (Example)
- preserve protein structure image if one already is displayed in protein box (Example)
- if there is little or no text, add the PBB_Summary section (Example)
- if there are few or no references, add the PBB_Citations section (Example)
- add PBB_Controls template to the top of page; adjust update flags as necessary (Example Example2)
- if there are no inline references, please add one linking the header line to Entrez Gene (Example)
- this is a temporary measure only for log files created before Nov 15.
[edit] 3. Log completion
- Go to User:ProteinBoxBot/PBB_Log_Index
- Mark your log file as completed (Example)
[edit] BONUS: Set redirects and links
- Ensure that the gene symbol, gene title, and common aliases go to PBB gene page
- … unless gene symbol/title/alias is already taken by another page (homonym)
- For PBB to update, the ProteinBoxBox template must be at or redirected from one of the search terms, or be in the Protein Directory!
- If you're inspired, wikilink PBB gene page to other relevant articles, and wikilink from other relevant articles to the PBB gene page.
[edit] Special cases
- Some pages for protein families have multiple protein boxes (e.g., cryptochrome). In those cases, I recommend creating a new gene-specific page with reciprocal wikilinking
- When in doubt, you can and should make a judgment call based on what you feel is best. I'd always trust human judgment over universal rules.
