should we merge with proprietary software? -- Tarquin

I know but it can be hardware. -- Taku 22:31 Jan 6, 2003 (UTC)

Good point! *slaps self* And I've been fiddling with an old CD-ROM that has a proprietary interface just today! DOH! -- Tarquin 22:34 Jan 6, 2003 (UTC)

But is there any non-proprietary hardware? So it seems a kind of lame that there are two article proprietary and proprietary software. Maybe proprietary should redirect to proprietary software then mention about it. Or I don't know really. -- Taku 22:38 Jan 6, 2003 (UTC)

Yes, you can see open hardware

This entry had to be redone. The old contents were refering to the word in a software-only-context, which has little to do with the actual meaning and broader usage of the term. Feel free to copy the contents of the old version to the software-only version of the page, linked from here. -- Nixdorf

There's an insurmountable problem here: proprietary is an adjective and belongs in Wiktonary. It can never be more than an expanded dictionary definition. Think of the proprietary colonies like Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Etc etc Wetman 19:49, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Merge

I do not think the article should be merged, I'll think about ways it can be expanded but for now the concept can include concepts of ownership vs. open, and I'll get a few quotes on when Proprietary was used (espeically in the context of software since that is recent history) and expand the article based on the concepts described. --ShaunMacPherson 05:16, 1 September 2005 (UTC)
