Talk:Proper names of Babylonia and Assyria

[edit] Readability
The article is one unbroken block of text, so I have added the "clean up" template to this page. The text itself appears to be ok, it could just use to be broken up and have a few headings, etc., inserted.--Pariah 16:00, May 16, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Merge proposal
I propose a merge with either the Akkadian language or cuneiform script articles. "Proper names of Babylonia and Assyria" is very long and unnatural entry for an article. The text could also be shortened. --JFK 13:37, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yeah, the articles with "Babylonia and Assyria" in the title are relics of a mammoth 1911 Brittanica article that was originally pasted from a scanner in 2001 (copyright had expired, so its free use) then later chopped up into arbitrary components because it was so long. They're all quite out of date, and over the past year I've already merged quite a few of them in with other existing articles. This is yet another article in that category, where any useful info, if there is any, ought to be merged into the other articles you mentioned, some here, some there... ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 15:07, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
I added some headings. The first part is clearly connected with the cuneiform script, but the Proper names headings could perhaps be moved to Akkadian language and Sumerian language. --JFK 12:59, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- I do not think that the proposed merger makes much sense. I say leave this article here, hopefully someday interested editors will improve it. Bucketsofg 17:33, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] History of this article
Trust me, this is straight up from the 1911 EB. In Wikipedia's infancy days, long before I got here, there was apparently this mammoth-sized 1911 article entitled "Babylonia and Assyria" that was way out of date, the term "Sumer" hadn't even come into vogue yet, hence the title "Babylonia and Assyria" which is itself invaluable as a snapshot of 19th century ideas about Mesopotamia beginning to metamorphosize into 20th century ideas. Anyway, in I think approximately 2002, someone came up with the idea of splitting this behemoth up into component parts. This chunk received the title it has now: Proper names of Babylonia and Assyria. The original version was produced with scanning equipment, meaning some words were misread or appeared as jumbled symbols. Many of the vestiges of that original break-up have been more appropriately dealth with since then, but this one still has not. That is why the best proposals so far seem to be to carefully merge anything that isn't outdated, with the abovementioned articles. ፈቃደ (ውይይት) 19:03, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
