[edit] Corporate History
Proxim was founded in 1984, initially headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Proxim, Inc., has more than 20 years of experience in the wireless LAN market.
In 1994, Proxim was first to market with its RangeLAN2(TM) 2.4 GHz frequency hopping wireless LAN product family, which has attracted more than 100 OEMs and wireless solutions providers worldwide. In 1999, Proxim established itself as a leader in the home networking market with Symphony(TM) cordless networking products.
Proxim was a founding member of the Wireless LAN Interoperability Forum (www.wlif.com). Proxim was also a core member of the HomeRadioFrequency Working Group (HomeRF), which was committed to providing a broad range of interoperable cordless consumer devices.
Proxim was at one time the number three player in corporate wireless equipment sales, right behind Cisco Systems and Symbol Technologies, and had a share price as high as $250 in 2000. It has deals with Avaya and Motorola to provide wireless voice services to corporations, and another deal with Intel to make Tsunami products that use WiMAX. Proxim owned the ORiNOCO brand of Wi-Fi equipment which it bought from Agere Systems in 2002, and the Tsunami wide-area wireless equipment which came from a merger with Western Multiplex that same year.
In September 2004, Proxim settled its legal tussle with Symbol Technologies, agreeing to pay $22.75 million, plus a 2 percent royalty on future sales of certain products to Symbol.
Proxim received notification on June 3, 2005 that it faced de-listing from NASDAQ after 30 consecutive days priced below $1 per share. On July 27, 2005, YDI, Inc. acquired the operations of Proxim Corporation from the bankruptcy estate of that company. On November 7, 2005, YDI, Inc., changed its corporate name to Terabeam, Inc. and its ticker symbol to TRBM. On September 10, 2007 Terabeam, Inc. changed its corporate name to "Proxim Wireless Corporation," the current name of its largest operating unit. In connection with the name change, the company also changed its ticker symbol from "TRBM" to "PRXM."
The company has moved its headquarters from Sunnyvale to San Jose, California.
On January 16, 2008, Proxim announced that Pankaj Manglik has been promoted to be the company's President and Chief Executive Officer.
