The Province of Fermo was constituted by Italian law in 2004 and is the fifth province of the Marche Region. The province will come into existence in 2009. The administrative centre will be the city of Fermo (pop. 35,502 in the 2001 census). Other major cities (comuni), with their population, will be Porto Sant'Elpidio (22,752), Porto San Giorgio (15,869), Sant'Elpidio a Mare (15,332), and Montegranaro (12,860).

At the 2001 census the 40 comuni that are planned to comprise the new province had a population of 166,218 inhabitants and a land area of 859.51 km² (331.86 sq mi). All of these comuni are currently located in the Province of Ascoli Piceno; their separation in 2009 will reduce that province's population and land area accordingly. A number of other comuni in the Province of Ascoli Piceno are currently considering whether to apply to join the new province.
