Proud Mary (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Proud Mary are purveyors of that thin wild mercury sound a country/blues/rock hybrid. They wear their traditional influences on their sleeve (Dylan,The Band, Faces, Merle Haggard, Mott the Hoople, Neil Young) , formed in Royton, Oldham, England; they became the first band to sign to Noel Gallagher's Sour Mash label[1] and their debut album 'The Same Old Blues', which was produced by Noel, went Gold in June 2001. The band parted with Sour Mash in 2003, while the follow up album "Love and Light" was released by Redemption Records - owned by Gaz Whelan of the Happy Mondays - in 2004: another critically well received album.

The Band has toured extensively playing all the major festivals and touring with artists such as Neil Young, The Black Crowes, and Ryan Adams. Due to members' questionable recreational habits the line up has changed frequently, but has always centred around the Greg Griffin and Paul Newsome axis (Paul being the principal songwriter). In 2007 whiskey soaked gravel voiced Greg Griffin released his first self penned solo record "Glass Bottom Boat" and completed a successful European Tour. Paul Newsome now lives in Los Angeles and is working on various projects including crafting soundtracks for films. Former Drummer Terry Kirkbride now plays percussion with Oasis and Nev Cottee is enjoying a successful stint as a late night eclectic radio D.J. on Oldhams much revered Revolution FM (which also features Mike Joyce & Mani amongst its ranks).

Recently Proud Mary have reconvened and are currently recording a new album. A wide tour is to follow including an appearance by Paul Newsome at the 2008 Isle of Wight Festival . Proud Mary keep on rolling.
