Protozoal merogony

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merogony (also known as schizogony) is an asexual reproductive process of protozoa.[1] A trophozoite increases in size while its nucleus and other organelles divide repeatedly before cytokinesis. During this process the organism is known as a schizont. The schizont ruptures releasing merozoites. Organisms which use this process in their life cycle include piroplasms, the tick parasite,[2], and plasmodium, the malarial parasite of mosquitoes.[3]
