A prototype is something that is representative of a category of things. The terms derives from the compound Greek word "πρωτότυπο" [sounds like: protOteepo] with the first word "πρώτος" [protos] meaning the "the first one", and the second constituent, the word "τύπος" [teepos], meaning "kind, type, sort, form". It is used to signify that an object/event/situation is novel and the first of its kind, e.g. "the first type of", or to denote that an object/event/situation is distinctly typical and representative of its relevant category.
