Project Rebirth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Project Rebirth, Inc. is a non-profit organization using time-lapse photography that is currently documenting the day-by-day rebuilding of the former World Trade Center site in New York City. The project is directed by Jim Whitaker, President of Imagine Entertainment, the production company founded by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer.
Ten 35mm time-lapse motion picture cameras, situated in and around the site since the six-month anniversary of 9/11, will continue to shoot one frame of film every five minutes, seven days a week, until this historic reconstruction is completed. This technology will enable the public to view the entire reconstruction within a twenty-minute time span. The final film is intended for a future museum memorial installation.

[edit] History
In June 2004, The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) announced that Project Rebirth would continue to be part of the consideration process for the World Trade Center Memorial – one of only 15 institutions selected from a list of 120 submissions worldwide.
In the meantime, their Web site will enable people worldwide to experience and learn about the complexities involved in the rebuild as it occurs every day – in real-time – through the images captured by the cameras and the expert information provided by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the LMDC, and many others – from the FDNY to key members of the engineering and architectural firms overseeing the project.
Project Rebirth is a chronicle of the strength of the human spirit coping with disaster in the aftermath of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center. As a feature-length documentary combining time lapse photography with intimate stories of ten people coping post 9/11, it is recording the minute-by-minute redevelopment of the WTC site and represents the first long term film record of ten people dealing with grief and trauma.
Proceeds from the “Project Rebirth” documentary will be reinvested to endow a Project Rebirth Center for victims of and first responders to events of traumatic loss. The Project Rebirth Center will meet an urgent need to improve the specialized care and support needed during and after major disasters.
With a Hollywood production track record including American Gangster, 8 Mile, Cinderella Man, and other critically acclaimed, commercially successful films, Jim Whitaker, President of Imagine Entertainment, is the Director and Founder of Project Rebirth. Jim began his career as a documentary filmmaker creating socially conscious films to raise money for non-profit organizations, including Best Buddies, Rebuilding Together, and Shooting Back, an organization that teaches photography to homeless inner-city youth.
