Project Reality (PR) is a modification for the computer game Battlefield 2 on the PC. The mod's aim is to use the game engine, developed by Digital Illusions CE (DICE), to create a more realistic combat environment than the original BF2 gameplay provided, and place a greater emphasis on teamwork and cooperation.

Most aspects of Battlefield 2 that have the capacity to be modified (such as physical properties of weapons and vehicles) have been tweaked to reflect their real life counterparts.

[edit] Features

Project Reality primarily focuses on making gameplay a more realistic (in respect to actual warfare) and tactical affair than with standard the Battlefield 2 game.

[edit] Realism

Although the mod uses many of BF2 weapons and vehicles, their properties were modified for increased realism. Ballistics were adjusted to reflect those of real weapons, including characteristics such as deviation and bullet drop. Damage caused by weapons is also much more realistic (for example, a tank can be immobilized by an appropriate weapon) while the inclusion of destructible buildings in later versions of the modification allow for a more realistic battlespace.

[edit] Game mechanics

PR game mechanics are significantly different than those of unmodded Battlefield 2. Players can no longer spawn on any of the flags that their team captured during the match. Instead, infantry may either enter the battlefield through rearward permanent spawn points, or by a new system using squad leader placed rally points.

These rally points enable the members of the squad to both enter the battlespace closer to the front line, while also giving them a forward area to requisition specialized weapons. This is because, unlike in standard Battlefield 2 matches, players may only spawn with a very limited range of special kits (medical and engineering personnel being the only specialized kits available to spawn with). In order to access heavier ordinance such as anti-tank weapons and squad automatic weapons, players must use their squad's rally points or commander-placable assets.

These assets, also an exclusive addition to Project Reality, range from fixed anti-aircraft positions to forward fortified spawn points. These spawn points, placable as firebases or the more fortified bunkers, allow not only for reinforcements (usable by the entire team, as opposed to a single squad) but also for the requisition of special "limited kits" such as sniper rifles and anti-tank guided missiles.

PR features three major game modes:

  • A conventional warfare mode, Assault and Secure, where players have to capture control points in a predetermined sequence, in order to reduce the enemy's ticket count (similar to BF2's Conquest mode).
  • A counterattack mode, Counter-Attack, where players of one team are placed on the offensive for the first half of the game and tasked with capturing points held by the opposing team. When the "counter-attack" phase begins, the opposing team receives additional vehicular reinforcements and is permitted to recapture control points lost during the initial enemy attack.
  • Insurgency mode, intended to simulate asymmetrical warfare, where a conventional army team has to find and destroy hidden ammo caches, while the insurgent team defends them.

[edit] Factions

Project Reality includes six factions.
