[edit] Plot

The main story revolves around Professor Layton and his young apprentice Luke traveling to meet Layton's mentor, who has sent them a letter about a mysterious box. Layton's mentor writes that he wishes to have Layton take care of his information if anything were to happen to him. Professor Layton and Luke rush to the mentor's home, only to find him killed under mysterious circumstances. From there the pair travel to discover the secrets of the "pandora's box". The gameplay is to take place partly on a train, as well as in a small town where it seems to be affected by the mystery which lies inside the large castle.

[edit] The Professor's Trunk

The Professor's Trunk differs slightly from Curious Village in that there are four new features inside: "Mystery Journal", "Unique Camera", "Hamster", and "Herb Tea." There are 12 pages in the Mystery Journal, each page of which can be accessed by solving puzzles with which people in a town challenge Professor Layton. Mystery Journal leads to solving the mystery at the last town they visit. Also, by solving puzzles, users are able to receive parts of the Unique Camera. However, users must correctly place the parts of the camera in order to start solving puzzles. In "Hamster", users must help the hamster lose weight by letting him walk or run using items such as apples or houses. This hamster can be received from the cook at a restaurant in the train. With the Herb Tea feature, users will mix three herbs received by solving puzzles. There are a total of 8 herbs, with 12 correct combinations. Most people at the last town are thirsty so Professor Layton offers them herb tea. There is a specific type of tea each person wants, and users must recognize which tea the townsperson is looking for.

[edit] Secret mode

Inside the secret mode, there are four things: "Weekly Mystery Connection", "Mystery Journal", "Challenge from Professor Layton" and "Top Secret". In Weekly Mystery Connection, players are able to download new puzzles weekly. In Mystery Journal, players are able to review and solve the puzzles that they have already solved. In Challenge from Professor Layton, there are 12 additional puzzles hidden, which players must either complete the game, help the hamster (in Professor's Trunk), help people with herb tea (with Professor's Trunk), and solve the mystery with a camera (take pictures of places and find what's different from the picture the camera took and the actual place, also with Professor's Trunk). After solving those additional 12, and also the 138 puzzles from the actual story, there's 3 more additional puzzles which are extremely difficult to solve. Picarats that can be gained from solving these puzzles range from 60 to 99.

[edit] Top Secret

In the Top Secret section, there are 5 files which will be unlocked depending on the picarats a user has, plus the secret door which needs a code from Curious Village and Last Time Travel in order to open.
