Description: A view of the reservoir atop Proffit Mountain as seen from Taum Sauk Mountain, five miles distant.
Caption: In 1960 the Union Electric Company (now AmerenUE) blasted the top of Proffit Mountain in the St. Francois Mountains of Missouri to create a reservoir to store water from the East Fork Black River. The reservoir is filled at night so as to be available as a source of hydroelectric power during times of peak demand during the day. A full description is found in the Taum Sauk pumped storage plant article.
