[edit] Indic Font Size Help!
Hey Thanks for your message on the forum. I tried the Wikipedia:Bugzilla, but the feature request forum is currently inactive! What do I do?
Priyankoo 15:18, 28 May 2007 (UTC
- Hey. Bugzilla is over here. I have never actually used it myself but I know it is (amongst other things) used for requests to change configurations for local wikipedia's, which seems to be what you want. I think you need to create a create an account there and then 'enter a new bug report' (confusing, I know). ssepp(talk) 15:30, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Assamese literature
The quote from Moffat Mills belong in Assamese language, IMO. Also, this issue was more closely examined by Hiren Gohain (in the 80's, 90's?) which should probably find some place here. Chaipau 14:47, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
- A complete overhaul is not needed. The Assamese literature page was created from the Assamese language article by cutting out the literature portion, so that this article could concentrate on its literature. The idea is to include literary criticism in this article. This hasn't happened yet, but would possibly happen at some point in the future. You could help.
- Assamese language, otoh, could define the language---phonetics, morphology, historical development---and also discuss the issue of how close it came to being called a Bengali dialect, and why linguistically this cannot be true. Just in passing, though, since there is not need today to rake up a late 19th- early 20th century issue.
- There is also a case for examining the linguistic closeness of Assamese with Sylheti/Chittagonian etc.

[edit] tip on using Assamese words
Hi Priyankoo, I have noticed that you are inserting Assamese script words in many of the Assam related articles. Good stuff! Please consider using the format ({{lang-as|অসমীয়া শব্দ}}) instead of the long customised formatting below that you have been using:
([[Assamese language|Assamese]]: <span style='font-size:14.0pt'>অসমীয়া শব্দ</span>)

- Can you explain what you mean when you say unicode makes the characters beyond recognition? If I look at http://as.wikipedia.org and http://bpy.wikipedia.org the latter is readable enough although there are other prime examples like http://bn.wikipedia.org where I think the defaults (at least more pleasant sizes) are being used. For the Assamese wikipedia, Firefox2/1024x768 puts user name etc on the top behind the wiki logo as well as introducing horizontal scrolling. Lot of people use even lower res (800x600) screens and they would be having nightmares. What screen res do you use in your observations?-Deepraj | Talk 11:16, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Height of Userbox Assam
Good stuff with the Userbox on Assam. Would you mind if we try to cut down the height to around 45px to fit in with other userboxes? I have a sample comparison in my sandbox if you like -Deepraj | Talk 16:16, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for your responses. Its getting interesting, isn't it? Couple of suggestions: (1) consider bringing "line-height" down to 0.85em or so (2)consider the userbox template code. I tried to reproduce the same effect with the 14pt Assamese script using that template and it seemed to be less than half the code size apart from the blue colour on Assam. Result was a bigger rhino and smaller box height though ;-) -Deepraj | Talk 16:22, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vowel length in Assamese
Hi Priyankoo, could you comment on Assamese vowel length contrasts, please. I am out of my depths here. Look at the following two entries to see what I am driving at. User_talk:SameerKhan#Assamese_script.2Fvowels_etc (I made a comment here) and User_talk:Chaipau#Vowel_length_in_Assamese (SameerKhan finds it interesting). Look forward to your input. Thanks. [edit] Assamese vowel length
Hi Priyankoo,
Thanks for the info. That confirms what I had read before about Assamese... as a typological characteristic, Eastern Indic languages do not use vowel length as a distinctive feature, and I would've been surprised if Assamese was an exception. --SameerKhan (talk) 02:33, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- Ah yes, I'm still curious about the issue of the ৰ-s in Assamese. I still see them incorrectly. Instead of refs and rôfolas, I see ৰ্ (rô with hôshonto) all over the place. So প্রথম looks like পৰ্থম, and so on (I hope that what I wrote comes out the way I want it to look!). --SameerKhan (talk) 08:55, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
-
- It is possible the font you are using does not support the Assamese ৰ in the প্র ligature (rofola). But if you see the correct ligature with প্ৰ, then you are using the Assamese supported fonts and it is a spelling error. If a font supports the Assamese rofola, then I would expect it to support the reph too. Chaipau (talk) 12:03, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Ref and rôfola again
I use Mozilla Firefox (2.0.0.11) on Windows XP. I have installed the Indic language pack, and thus I can see other languages fine, including rôfola and ref in Bengali. It's only the rôfola and ref of Assamese that don't work. I'll check out www.xodbo.org and see if that helps. Thanks! --SameerKhan (talk) 20:37, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
- I found out the problem. I use the fonts Bangla and Likhan, both of which only support Bengali র in ligatures (e.g. র্প and প্র). When I use those fonts, the Assamese ligatures both look like পৰ্. But when I switch the font to Aharoni, both turn out the way they should look. Unfortunately, I find the fonts Bangla and Likhan to be much prettier, so I'm going to stick with them for now, but once I find a really simple and attractive font that supports both Bengali র and Assamese ৰ in all ligatures, I'll switch to that. Thanks for your guys's help! --SameerKhan (talk) 21:03, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

- I think the ekushey fonts support Assamese r-ligatures. http://ekushey.org/?page/otf_bangla_fonts#pandd Chaipau (talk) 15:36, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Prosody
No, I didn't find the answer at xobdo.org. I just experimented with my settings.
And re: prosody, yes I have read Shyamal Das's dissertation, and I have met Shakuntala Mahanta at conferences, although I haven't read her dissertation yet. Thanks for the link! --SameerKhan (talk) 02:57, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
